How to Test an AI Companion's Memory Before You Pay
Every companion app looks flawless in week one, because nothing has to be recalled yet. A two week protocol that tells you whether the memory is real while it is still free to walk away.

To test an AI companion's memory before you pay, tell it eight to ten specific, checkable facts in the first two sessions, write them down yourself, then stop mentioning them. Come back after three days, a week, and two weeks and see how many come back without a prompt. Most apps hold detail well for 48 hours. The gap between a good memory and a bad one only shows up after the free trial has already ended, which is exactly the problem.
Memory is the feature people say they are buying and almost nobody actually tests. It is easy to see why. In week one everything works, because the whole conversation still fits in the model's context window and nothing has to be recalled at all. The failure happens in week five, on the annual plan, when she asks what you do for a living for the third time.
This is a practical protocol for finding that out while it is still free to walk away.
Why AI companion memory looks great for the first week
Almost every companion app runs on a large language model that reads back a chunk of recent conversation before each reply. That chunk is large. For the first few days of talking, your entire history fits inside it, so the app appears to remember everything perfectly without doing anything clever.
Real long-term memory is a separate system layered on top: the app decides which facts are worth keeping, writes them into storage, and pulls the relevant ones back into future conversations. That layer is where apps differ enormously, and it does not get exercised until your history is too big to fit in the window.
So the honest version of the advice is that a seven day trial cannot tell you much on its own. What it can tell you is whether the app has a real memory layer at all, and there are ways to force that question early.
How do you test an AI companion's memory?
Give it facts that are specific, unusual and verifiable, then check for unprompted recall later. Vague statements like "I had a hard week" are useless as tests because a plausible response does not require memory. A detail like "my sister Marta is defending her thesis on the 14th" either comes back correctly or it does not.
Here is the protocol that produces a clear answer in about two weeks.
| When | What you do | What you are testing |
|---|---|---|
| Session 1 | Share 8 to 10 specific facts: names, dates, a job detail, a pet peeve, a recurring commitment. Write them in a note. | Baseline. Nothing yet. |
| Session 2, same day | Ask nothing. Just talk about something unrelated for 15 minutes. | Whether it pads the conversation with your details naturally. |
| Day 3 | Open with "what have I got coming up this week?" | Retrieval with a soft prompt. |
| Day 7 | Mention a related topic without the fact. Say "work was rough" and see if the project you named comes up. | Associative recall, the hardest and most human part. |
| Day 10 | Deliberately contradict one fact you gave. Say you have a cat when you told it you have a dog. | Whether it notices, corrects you, or silently overwrites the truth. |
| Day 14 | Check your written note against what it now believes. Ask it directly to list what it knows about you. | Precision and drift. |
| Anytime | Find the memory settings. Can you read, edit and delete what it stored? | Whether memory is inspectable or a black box. |
The day 10 contradiction test is the one most people skip and the one that separates the serious apps. A companion with a real memory layer will usually push back gently: you mentioned a dog before, did you get a cat too? One with no persistence just agrees with whatever you said most recently, which feels agreeable and means the memory is worthless.
What counts as a good result?
A good companion recalls most of your specific facts at day 14 without being asked, connects them to new topics on its own, and notices when you contradict something. A weak one recalls facts only when you prompt directly, and reintroduces itself to your life every couple of weeks.
Do not expect perfection. No app in this category recalls everything, and any product claiming total recall is describing marketing rather than architecture. What you want is a system that keeps the things that matter: names, work, health, what you are worried about, what you told it not to bring up.
That last one is a useful test in itself. Tell it a topic you would rather not discuss. A companion with real memory will steer around it a month later. That is the behavior people actually mean when they say an app "gets" them.
Which AI companion apps are strongest on memory?
Among the well-known apps, Nomi is generally reported as the strongest at automatic long-term recall, storing structured notes that persist rather than relying on conversation history. Kindroid is close behind and gives you the most visibility, with a dashboard where you can read, edit and delete stored memories. Replika is the weakest of the three at holding detail across months.
We wrote a fuller breakdown of that in Replika vs Nomi vs Kindroid compared on memory and control, including where each one is the better buy than Gals.ai. Gals.ai does not claim the deepest memory in the category. What it does with memory is different: she uses it to start conversations rather than only answer them.
Whichever you test, run the same protocol on all of them. Impressions are unreliable here because a warm, well-written reply feels like being remembered even when nothing was retrieved at all.
How long should an AI girlfriend remember things?
Indefinitely, for the facts that define who you are, and that is a reasonable standard to hold an app to. Your name, job, family, health situation and the things you have asked it not to raise should never expire. Passing details from a Tuesday conversation eight months ago do not need to survive, and a companion that recalls every triviality can feel unnerving rather than close.
The practical question is not how long but what. Ask any app you are evaluating whether stored memories have a retention limit, and whether they survive a subscription lapse. Some apps quietly reduce memory depth on lower tiers, which means the recall you tested on a trial is not the recall you get on the plan you buy. Our guide to how AI girlfriend memory actually works goes deeper on the mechanics.
Should you test memory on a free tier or a paid trial?
Test on whatever tier you plan to buy, because memory is frequently a paid feature. Free tiers in this category often run a smaller context window, a shorter retention period, or no persistent memory layer at all, so a disappointing free experience may say nothing about the paid one, and an impressive free experience may not survive the upgrade in the direction you assume.
If money is the constraint, pay for one month of one app rather than running three free tiers at once. Parallel trials sound efficient and are not, because you end up repeating your life story to three characters and losing track of what you told which one. A month with one app under the protocol above gives you a real answer. Three simultaneous free trials give you three first weeks, which is precisely the period where every app looks the same.
What happens to everything you tell it?
Before you spend two weeks deliberately feeding a service the specifics of your life, read what it commits to doing with them. The questions worth answering: is the data encrypted at rest, is it sold or shared, is it used to train models, and can you export and permanently delete it.
That last one has a practical use beyond privacy. An app that lets you read your stored memories lets you audit the test, which is far more reliable than inferring from conversation. It is also worth remembering that a companion app is only one of many services holding personal detail about you, and if that thought is uncomfortable, the wider problem of getting your personal information taken down from data brokers is a separate job worth doing once.
For Gals.ai specifically, memories are reviewable, editable and permanently deletable from your account, conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest, and private conversations are not used to target advertising. Read the privacy policy rather than taking that from a blog post, including this one.
The short version
Write down eight to ten specific facts, tell them to the companion once, and stop referencing them. Check at day 3, day 7 and day 14 for unprompted recall. Contradict one fact on purpose and see whether it notices. Find out whether you can read and edit what it stored. Do this before the annual plan, not after.
