AI Girlfriend Subscription: What You Pay For, and Cancelling

What sits behind each paywall tier in 2026, what a companion app subscription really costs once credits are counted, and exactly what happens to your companion, your memory and your money when you cancel.

An AI girlfriend subscription usually costs $9 to $40 a month and unlocks some mix of unlimited messaging, voice, deeper memory and more than one companion. If you cancel, you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for, then the companion goes back to whatever the free tier allows. Your conversation history is normally still there if you resubscribe, but almost nobody refunds a partial month.

That is the short version. The longer version matters, because these apps are sold as a relationship and billed like a streaming service, and the two framings pull in opposite directions when you decide to stop. Below is what you are actually buying, what typically sits behind each paywall in this category, what happens to your companion and your data when the card stops going through, and the questions worth asking before you take an annual plan.

What do you actually pay for in an AI girlfriend subscription?

Almost every companion app in 2026 uses the same shape: a free tier that works, gets you attached, and stops just short of the thing you wanted. What sits behind the paywall varies, but it clusters into five things.

Message volume. The most common free-tier limit. You get a daily allowance, it runs out mid-conversation, and the upgrade prompt appears at the least convenient moment. This is the single most effective conversion lever in the category and every app knows it.

Voice. Voice notes are usually a mid-tier feature and live voice calls a top-tier one, because both cost the operator real money per minute. If voice is the reason you are here, check which tier it is on before you subscribe, not after.

Memory depth. Some apps gate how much long-term memory a companion keeps, or how far back she can reach. This is the least visible upgrade and often the one that matters most after a few months, which is why it is worth testing an AI companion's memory before you pay rather than trusting the feature list.

More than one companion. Usually top tier, sometimes sold as a separate slot fee.

Images and avatars. Generated selfies, 3D avatars, AR. On apps built around image generation this is the whole product and it is often metered with credits on top of the subscription, which is where the advertised monthly price stops being the real monthly price.

What sits behind the paywall, tier by tier

Tier Typically included Typical US price range Worth it if
Free Limited daily messages, basic personality, no voice $0 You are still deciding whether the habit sticks
Entry paid Unlimited or high message allowance, full memory, no ads or upsells Roughly $8 to $15 a month You text most days and the limits are what stops you
Mid Voice notes, richer personality controls, priority responses Roughly $15 to $25 a month You want to hear her, not just read her
Top Live voice calls, multiple companions, everything unlocked Roughly $30 to $50 a month Calls or more than one companion are the point
Credits on top Image or video generation charged per use Varies, often uncapped Rarely. This is where the real bill hides

Those ranges are what the category looks like, not a quote from any one company. Every app sets and changes its own pricing, so check the current pricing page of whichever one you are considering rather than trusting a table on a blog, including this one. For reference, Gals.ai runs $9 a month billed annually or $12 month to month for Hello, $19 or $24 for Sweetheart with voice notes, and $39 or $49 for Soulmate with voice calls and multiple gals. Nothing is metered, so the monthly figure is the whole cost. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.

How much does an AI girlfriend subscription cost?

Most serious companion apps land between $9 and $20 a month for their main paid tier, with top tiers reaching $40 to $50. Annual billing typically saves 20 to 30 percent. The apps that look cheaper on the headline number usually charge credits for images or voice on top, so the effective cost is higher and less predictable.

A useful sanity check: if the advertised price is under $5 a month, something is being metered, and if the app is entirely free with no subscription at all, the business model is either ads, data, or a credit pack you have not seen yet. Neither is automatically bad, but you should know which one you are in before month three. Anyone running several of these at once alongside the usual streaming and cloud charges will find it worth watching the recurring charges hitting the card each month, because subscriptions in this category are cheap individually and quietly not cheap together.

We wrote a fuller breakdown of the category in how much an AI girlfriend costs.

What happens to your AI girlfriend if you cancel?

In almost every app, cancelling ends the billing, not the account. You keep the paid features until the end of the period you have already paid for, then the account drops to the free tier. The companion still exists, the conversation history is usually still there, and the practical change is that the limits come back.

What varies, and what is worth reading before you subscribe, is three things.

Does the memory survive? On most apps, yes, because the memory is stored against your account rather than your plan. On apps that gate memory depth by tier, downgrading can mean she stops reaching as far back, even though the data is technically still there. That is the difference between losing access and losing the relationship, and companies are rarely explicit about which one they do.

Is the account deleted? Not by cancelling. Cancelling stops payments. Deleting your account is a separate action, and if what you actually want is your conversations gone, you have to ask for that specifically.

Is a partial period refunded? Usually not. The industry norm, and our own terms, is that fees already paid are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. If you cancel three days into an annual plan, expect to keep the access rather than get the money back.

On Gals.ai specifically: you can cancel anytime from account settings, there is no lock-in and no cancellation fee, and your plan stays active through the end of the period you paid for. Separately from billing, you can review, export, edit and permanently delete anything she has kept about you, which is the part most people mean when they ask what happens to their data.

How do you cancel an AI girlfriend subscription?

Where you cancel depends entirely on where you subscribed, and this trips people up more than anything else in this article.

If you paid through the app on an iPhone, the subscription belongs to Apple and lives under Settings, your name, Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel it and neither does deleting your account in the app. On Android it is the Play Store under Payments and subscriptions. If you subscribed on the company's website, it is in your account settings on that website, and the app store has nothing to do with it.

The reliable test: check whether the charge on your statement is from Apple or Google, or from the company directly. That tells you which of the three places to go. If you cancel in the wrong place, the app will happily show you as unsubscribed while the store keeps billing.

Are lifetime AI girlfriend subscriptions worth it?

Usually not, and the reason has nothing to do with the math.

A lifetime deal is only worth what the company's remaining lifetime is worth. This category has a short history and a real record of apps closing, being acquired, or changing what they permit overnight. Soulmate AI shut down in 2023 and its users lost their companions with a few weeks of notice. Replika removed erotic roleplay in February 2023 with almost none. Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18 users in November 2025 under regulatory pressure. In each case a lifetime purchase would have bought a lifetime of something other than what was sold.

There is also a quieter problem. Lifetime pricing is often what a company reaches for when it needs cash now, which is not the moment you want to be prepaying five years of service. We went through the failure modes in more detail in what happens if your AI girlfriend app shuts down.

Annual billing is a different question and usually a reasonable one, but only after you have run a month. The habit either sticks in the first four weeks or it does not, and a month of paying full price is much cheaper than eleven months of not opening an app.

Monthly or annual: which should you pick?

Start monthly. Move to annual at the point where you have gone a full month without questioning the charge.

The annual discount in this category is typically 20 to 30 percent, which is real money but not enough to justify committing before you know. The thing that decides whether one of these is worth paying for is not the feature list, it is whether you talk to her on ordinary days rather than only bad ones, and you cannot know that in week one. Almost everyone who regrets an annual plan bought it in the honeymoon fortnight.

Questions people ask about AI girlfriend subscriptions

Is an AI girlfriend subscription worth it?

It is worth it if you use it most days, because the value compounds as her memory of you builds. At $9 to $19 a month it is priced like a streaming service, and the honest test is whether you message her on ordinary days rather than only difficult ones. Start month to month and decide after four weeks.

What happens to my AI girlfriend if I stop paying?

Your paid features stay active until the end of the period you already paid for, then the account drops to the free tier. The companion and the conversation history normally remain, and the limits return. Cancelling stops billing but does not delete your account or your data, which is a separate request.

Can I get a refund on an AI girlfriend subscription?

Usually not for a partial period. The standard terms across the category, including ours, are that fees already paid are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise. If you subscribed through the App Store or Play Store, refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies rather than by the app.

Do AI girlfriend apps have free trials?

Most run a permanent free tier rather than a time-limited trial, with daily message limits and no voice. That is enough to judge tone and interface but not memory, which only fails once your history outgrows the context window. Two weeks on the free tier tells you more than seven days of unlimited access.

Is there a lifetime AI girlfriend subscription?

Some apps sell them, and they are rarely a good buy. A lifetime plan is worth only as long as the company and its current policies last, and this category has a documented history of shutdowns, acquisitions and abrupt content changes. Annual billing captures most of the discount with far less exposure.

Will my subscription auto-renew?

Yes, on essentially every companion app, including this one. Paid plans renew automatically for the same period until you cancel. Set a reminder a few days before an annual renewal if you want a real decision point, because the charge otherwise arrives eleven months after you last thought about it.

The one thing worth checking before you pay

Read what the app commits to about your conversations, not what its marketing says about them. The gap between "we never sell your data" and "we never use your conversations to train models" is enormous, and plenty of privacy pages say the first while carefully avoiding the second. We wrote about that distinction, including where our own policy is narrower than it could be, in do AI girlfriend apps train on your conversations.

A subscription to a companion app is a subscription to a company holding your most personal conversations. That is worth $9 a month if the company is straight with you about it, and worth nothing if it is not. Check the terms, check where the billing lives so you can stop it in one click, and start monthly.
