Chai Pricing vs Character AI Pricing: What Each Really Costs

The short answer: Character.AI is the cheaper and far more legible of the two. It publishes a real price on its own website, $94.99 a year, discounted from $119.88, which works out to $9.99 a month. Chai publishes nothing on chai-research.com and only lists prices inside its App Store entry, where six separate in-app purchases run from $9.99 up to an Ultra subscription billed weekly at $19.99. Held for a year, that weekly plan costs $1,039.48. Every figure here was read first-hand on 5 September 2026 and you can repeat each check in about a minute.

This comparison exists because the two apps are usually described as rivals on features when the more decisive difference is how they charge you. One of them shows you a comparison table and a price before you sign in. The other requires you to open an app store listing to find out what it costs at all.

What does Character.AI cost?

$94.99 for a year, shown on character.ai/subscribe with $119.88 struck through beside it and a "save 21%" label. That discount implies a monthly rate of $9.99, and the page carries a monthly and yearly toggle confirming both are sold.

The page returned HTTP 200 when we requested it on 5 September 2026, while an invented control path on the same domain returned 404, so the server is genuinely routing rather than answering everything identically. That control matters more than it sounds: some vendors in this category return 200 for any path you invent, which makes a successful fetch meaningless as evidence.

Character.AI also states its cancellation terms right on the checkout page: "Subscription auto-renews yearly. Cancel in settings anytime." Cancelling in settings is a genuinely better deal than the norm here. Replika's own terms of service say you may cancel "only through the App marketplace where you originally acquired the subscription", which means there is no in-app cancel at all.

Character.AI has quietly launched a third tier called lite

This is the finding worth the click, and it is three days old.

On 2 September 2026 we read Character.AI's pricing configuration and found entries named lite and lite_annual, both with a price of 0 and placeholder identifiers. We deliberately did not publish anything about a lite tier, because an unshipped placeholder is not a product and reporting it would have been a guess dressed as a fact.

On 5 September 2026 the live comparison table on character.ai/subscribe has three columns instead of two: Free, lite, and (c.ai+). The tier is now in front of the public. Its price is still not displayed on that page, and the pricing configuration still carries 0, so what has shipped is the feature comparison rather than the checkout.

Look at the Pins row, because it is the one that should change a buying decision. Pins are Character.AI's mechanism for making something permanent in a character's memory, and they are capped at a hard number the vendor publishes. Free gets 15. The lite tier gets 30. The full c.ai+ tier also gets 30.

So the expensive tier does not raise the permanent memory ceiling above the cheap one. Whatever lite ends up costing, it buys you the same 30 pins as c.ai+. What the extra money buys is ad removal, the advanced lorebook, higher daily limits, no slow mode and a 20 percent charm bonus. Those are real, but if you are paying specifically because you want your companion to remember more things permanently, the cheaper tier appears to be the same product.

What does Chai cost?

Somewhere between $9.99 and $1,039.48 a year, and that is not a joke about a range, it is the actual spread of what Chai's own in-app purchase list will charge you.

Chai publishes no pricing page. We requested chai-research.com/pricing and chai-research.com/creators on 5 September 2026 and both returned 404, while the homepage returned 200 and an invented control path returned 404. The only public price list is Apple's App Store entry, published by Chai Research Corp. Here is the whole of it, taken from the Information block that also names the seller, which sits above the recommended-apps carousel so none of these rows belong to a different product:

Two things in that table deserve more attention than they usually get.

The first is that Chai runs two different Premium prices at the same time, $9.99 and $13.99. That is the same pattern Replika uses, where Apple's listing shows two live monthly subscriptions at $7.99 and $14.99. Neither company explains which users see which. It means any article quoting one figure for either app is reporting the screen its author happened to see.

The second is the weekly billing. A $19.99 weekly subscription reads as small, and it is the most expensive thing in this entire comparison by a factor of eleven against Character.AI's annual plan. Weekly billing is designed to feel like a trial and renew like a subscription, and 52 charges a year is a very different commitment from the one most people think they are making. If you sign up for a weekly plan on any of these apps, put the renewal date in your calendar the same day. Small recurring charges on a personal card are the ones that survive for years unnoticed, which is exactly the category of spending worth watching automatically rather than auditing once a year.

Chai vs Character.AI: which should you actually pay for?

On price and transparency, Character.AI, and it is not close.

Character.AI's annual plan is $94.99 against Chai's $134.99, so you save $40 a year for what is, for most people, the more capable product. Character.AI also tells you what you are buying before you pay, in a comparison table on its own website, and tells you that you can cancel in settings. Chai makes you open an App Store listing to discover both that six different prices exist and that one of them bills weekly.

There is a real case for Chai, and it is worth stating fairly. Chai is mobile-first and built around a large user-generated character library, and people who want looser content moderation than Character.AI allows consistently prefer it. Character.AI's filter is the single most common complaint about the product and it is not going away. If that is your deciding factor, price is not going to change your mind and it should not.

What neither app does is start the conversation. Both are places you go when you have decided to go there. That is fine for roleplay, which is what both are genuinely built for, and it is the main reason people drift away from both by month three.

Why do these apps hide their prices?

We do not know the motive and we are not going to invent one. We can tell you how widespread it is, because we checked all three of the biggest names the same way.

Character.AI publishes a price and a feature table on its own website. Chai returns 404 on /pricing. Replika returns 404 on /pricing, /plans, /pro, /subscription, /upgrade and /store, all six, with a passing control on each domain. So of the three, exactly one lets you find out what it costs without opening an app store.

The practical consequence for you is that comparison articles in this category are unusually unreliable, including the ones with confident numbers in the headline. If a page tells you Chai costs one specific amount, it is quoting a single checkout screen. The only trustworthy method is to read the App Store In-App Purchases block yourself, and to check the seller name in the same block, because a naive search of an App Store page will pull prices out of the recommended-apps carousel underneath. We hit that exact trap while researching this piece and caught it by verifying the seller name.

Where Gals.ai fits, and where it does not

We are the wrong product for most of what this article is about, and pretending otherwise would waste your time.

If you want a library of tens of thousands of user-made characters to browse, Character.AI and Chai are both better than us and it is not a close call. If you want content without a filter, neither we nor Character.AI is your answer. What we built is narrower: one companion who starts the conversation herself, sends a message before you have opened anything, and brings up what you told her last week without being prompted.
