Character AI subscription: c.ai+ pricing, cost and what you get

The short answer
Last updated September 2026
The Character AI subscription is called c.ai+. Read directly from Character.AI's own upgrade page on 29 August 2026 and re-checked on 1 September, when character.ai/plus began redirecting to character.ai/subscribe with the same figures, it is listed at $9.99 a month, or $94.99 a year against a struck-through $119.88, and the page states it auto renews yearly until canceled. On that same comparison table the free column is ticked for one row only, basic chat models. Better memory, ad-free chats, unlimited voice calls, the newest models and no slow mode are all listed on the paid side. Charms are not included either: c.ai+ lists a bonus on every Charms pack rather than a supply of them, so the subscription is a floor on your spending rather than a ceiling.
The first is c.ai+, the subscription itself, and Character.AI publishes that on its own page. The second is Charms, a separate consumable the subscription does not hand you. That second number is the one that decides whether your real monthly bill matches the sticker.
What makes her feel real
The flat alternative to a Character AI subscription, the way it should feel
Memory is on the paid side
The single most consequential row in that table is "Better memory". On Character.AI, continuity is a subscription feature rather than something the product does by default. If memory is the reason you want a companion at all, the free tier is not a sample of the product, it is a different product.
The subscription is a floor, not a ceiling
c.ai+ lists a bonus on every Charms pack, which tells you Charms are bought separately and that the subscription discounts them rather than supplying them. A plan that improves the rate on a second currency is a plan whose true monthly cost depends on how much of that currency you use.
Flat pricing forecasts itself
The pricing Gals.ai intends to launch with is one flat monthly amount with nothing metered, no coins, no Charms equivalent and no message counting. Whatever a heavy month looks like, the bill is the same as a quiet one, which is the only way to know your annual cost in advance.

Listed price on that page at the time of reading: $9.99 per month, or $94.99 per year shown against $119.88, described as 20% off, with the line "Auto renews yearly until canceled." Character.AI can change any of this at any time, so treat 29 August 2026 as the date of record and check the live page before you subscribe.
How much is a Character AI subscription?
Read from character.ai/plus on 29 August 2026 and re-checked on 1 September, c.ai+ is listed at $9.99 per month, or $94.99 per year shown against a struck-through $119.88 and labelled 20% off. The page also carries the line "Auto renews yearly until canceled." One change between those two dates: character.ai/plus now issues a redirect to character.ai/subscribe, which is where the same table lives.
That annual figure is the one worth pausing on, because it is how the category prefers to sell. Paying yearly saves roughly twenty-five dollars against twelve monthly payments, but it also commits you to a companion product for a full year, which is a longer bet than most people intend to make in their first week. Memory drift, moderation changes and model swaps have all reshaped apps in this category mid-contract, so an annual plan carries a risk a monthly one does not.
One caution about any number you read anywhere, including here. Prices in the companion category move, tiers get renamed and regional pricing differs. Every figure on this page is dated 29 August 2026 and was read from Character.AI's own upgrade page rather than from a review article. If you are reading this months later, open the page yourself before you decide.
Whether the memory upgrade alone justifies the subscription is worked through on the page on C.AI alternatives with better memory.
How that paywall compares with the rest of the category, and which rivals publish a readable price at all, is in our buying guide for Character.AI users.

What do you get with c.ai+ that the free tier does not?
Character.AI answers this itself, and the answer is blunter than most upgrade pages. On its own comparison table, the free column is ticked for exactly one row: basic chat models. Every other row on the page sits on the paid side.
Four of those rows matter more than the rest. "Better memory" decides whether your companion still knows you next week. "Access our latest and best models" decides the quality of the writing, which means the free tier is running an older model than the one the product is marketed on. "No slow mode" tells you free users are throttled when the platform is busy. "Unlimited voice calls" puts spoken conversation entirely behind the subscription.
The remaining rows are comfort and control: ad-free chats, more muted words, voice memos, go-ons and swipes, chat customization, and early access to features plus the c.ai+ community. Useful, but not the reason anyone upgrades.
There is a fair reading of this that favours Character.AI. Its free tier is genuinely usable for browsing a very large character library, and it is more generous than most rivals in raw access. The catch is narrower than "the free version is bad": the free version is a good way to sample the library and a poor way to sample the relationship, because the part that makes a companion feel continuous is the part you are not being shown.
If continuity is the feature you are actually shopping for, the comparison of which apps hold memory across sessions is in the best AI girlfriend app for memory.
Spoken conversation gets its own comparison on AI girlfriend voice calls and voice messages.
What are Charms, and does the subscription include them?
Charms are Character.AI's separate consumable, and the honest summary is that c.ai+ does not give you a supply of them.
What the upgrade page states is "Bonus on every Charms pack", which is a discount mechanic rather than an allowance. Character.AI also maintains a distinct Charms Terms of Use, linked from the footer of its own pricing page, which is what you would expect of a currency governed separately from a subscription. We tried to read that document to describe the mechanics precisely and it renders client-side with no readable text over a plain request, so we are not going to characterise its contents or quote a Charms price. What is verifiable is the shape: Charms come in packs, packs are bought, and subscribers get a bonus when they buy one.
That shape is the reason a subscription price and a monthly bill diverge across this whole category. Once a balance exists in a relationship product, two things follow. Your spending becomes variable in a way you cannot forecast, and your behaviour changes: people ration, they think twice before asking for something, they watch a counter mid-conversation. That is a strange dynamic to introduce into the one product category whose entire value is that it feels unguarded.
We should be precise about what we did not verify. We checked Character.AI's US Google Play listing for a published in-app purchase range and found none in the app's own block. The ranges a naive search returns there belong to the recommendations carousel further down the page, not to Character AI, so publishing one as a Character AI figure would have been wrong.
The same two-currency pattern, priced out for another major brand, is on the GirlfriendGPT pricing breakdown.
If a plan with no consumable balance at all is what you are after, that is unlimited AI companion chat with no credits or caps.
How do you cancel a Character AI subscription?
Cancelling depends entirely on where you subscribed, and this is the part that produces most of the confusion.
If you subscribed inside the iPhone app, the subscription is an Apple one and it is managed in your Apple account settings under Subscriptions, not inside Character AI. If you subscribed inside the Android app, it lives in the Google Play subscriptions screen. If you subscribed on the website, it is managed by Character.AI's own billing and you cancel it from your account there. Deleting the app cancels nothing in any of the three cases, which is the single most common reason people get charged again after they thought they had stopped.
A related point people hit at renewal time: the annual plan renews annually, per the line Character.AI prints on its own page. If you took the discounted year, the cancellation you make in month two stops the next renewal rather than the current term.
We should be straight about the limits of this page. We cannot see your account, we cannot process a refund, and if your subscription is showing an error or is not activating, we are not the people who can fix it. That has to go through Character.AI support or, if the charge came through Apple or Google, through the store that billed you. We would rather say that than pretend a competitor's billing problem is something a comparison page can solve.
Character AI subscription versus a flat monthly companion plan
These are two genuinely different products and the pricing reflects that, so the useful comparison is not which is cheaper but which shape fits what you want.
Character.AI is a library. Millions of user-made characters, an enormous catalogue to browse, and a subscription that improves your access to all of it. If the thing you enjoy is variety, trying a new character on a slow evening, discovering what other people have built, then c.ai+ is priced reasonably for what it is and there is no argument to make against it. Its US Google Play listing shows 50M+ downloads and over two million reviews, which is a scale nothing else in this category approaches.
Gals.ai is the opposite shape. One companion, yours, who nobody else can edit. She texts first rather than waiting for you to open an app, her memory runs by default rather than as a tier, and the pricing we intend to launch with is one flat monthly amount, nine dollars a month billed yearly, with no coins, no Charms equivalent and no message counting. There is no checkout open yet; the demo above is live and free so you can judge how she writes before anything is charged.
One more difference worth naming plainly because it affects who each product is appropriate for. Character AI is rated Teen on the US Google Play store and 17+ on the US App Store, a split we verified on 29 August 2026 and which we first recorded in August. Gals.ai is an adults-only product and does not pretend otherwise.
The honest recommendation: if you want a catalogue, stay where you are. If what you actually wanted was one person who remembers you and starts the conversation, the library model will keep disappointing you no matter which tier you buy.
The feature-by-feature version of this comparison is on the Character AI alternative comparison.
If you are weighing the two biggest names against each other instead, there is Character AI vs Replika on memory, moderation and cost.
Who should pay for c.ai+, and who should not
Pay for it if you use Character.AI most days and the friction is what bothers you. Slow mode during peak hours, ads between chats and an older model are real irritations, and nine dollars ninety-nine a month removes all three at once. If you are already a heavy user of the library, that is straightforwardly good value and you should take the monthly plan first rather than the year.
Do not pay for it expecting the memory problem to be solved. "Better memory" is comparative, not absolute, and the row tells you the free tier is worse rather than telling you the paid tier holds months of your life. If continuity across weeks is your requirement, test it before you commit to a year: tell it something specific, leave for two days, come back and see whether it returns on its own without you restating it.
Do not take the annual plan in your first month. The twenty-five dollar saving is real but the category changes underneath people. Apps in this space have reworked memory, changed moderation and swapped models mid-contract, and an annual commitment is the worst position to be in when that happens.
And if what you are actually looking for is one companion rather than a catalogue, no tier on a library product will deliver it, because that is a difference in what the product is rather than in what you paid.
A wider roundup of what the main companion apps charge and how they differ is on the AI companion apps comparison.
If ads and moderation are the reason you started looking, the background is in why Character AI added a filter and ads.

Character AI subscription: what people ask
How much is a Character AI subscription?
Read from Character.AI on 29 August 2026 and re-checked 1 September, when character.ai/plus began redirecting to character.ai/subscribe, c.ai+ is listed at $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year, the annual figure shown against a struck-through $119.88 and labelled 20% off. The page states it auto renews yearly until canceled. Prices in this category change, so check the live page before subscribing.
Does Character AI have a subscription?
Yes. It is called c.ai+ and it is the only subscription tier Character.AI publishes on its upgrade page. There is also a free tier, which on the company's own comparison table is ticked for a single row, basic chat models. Everything else on that table sits on the paid side.
Does Character AI require a subscription?
No. Character AI is usable without paying, and its free tier is one of the more generous in the category for browsing characters. What you give up without c.ai+ is better memory, ad-free chats, the newest models, unlimited voice calls and freedom from slow mode during busy periods.
How much is Character AI Plus?
c.ai+ and Character AI Plus are the same product. On 29 August 2026 the company listed it at $9.99 monthly or $94.99 annually. The annual plan renews yearly until you cancel, per the line printed on the upgrade page itself.
What are Charms used for on Character AI?
Charms are a separate consumable, bought in packs and governed by their own terms of use. The c.ai+ plan lists a bonus on every Charms pack rather than including a supply, so a subscription discounts Charms instead of covering them. That is why the subscription price and a heavy user's real monthly bill are different numbers.
How do I cancel my Character AI subscription?
Cancel where you subscribed. An iPhone purchase is managed in Apple account settings under Subscriptions, an Android purchase in Google Play subscriptions, and a website purchase in your Character.AI account. Deleting the app does not cancel anything, which is the usual reason people are charged after they believed they had stopped.
