What does unlimited messages actually mean on an AI girlfriend app?

It means one of three quite different things, and vendors rarely say which. The word on the pricing page is the same in all three cases, so the only way to know is to look at what else the app sells.

The first meaning is genuinely unlimited text: you can send as many messages as you like on your plan, forever, and nothing else is charged. The second is unlimited on the paid tier only, with a free tier that caps you daily so the upgrade prompt has somewhere to appear. The third, and by far the most common, is unlimited text with everything expensive metered separately: images, voice notes, video, and sometimes simply continuing a very long conversation.

That third pattern is why people feel misled. The messages really are uncapped. The experience is not, because the parts of the experience you actually wanted are drawn from a balance you have to keep refilling.

• Unlimited text, metered extras: images, voice and video draw on coins or credits

Why AI girlfriend apps limit messages in the first place

Not out of greed, mostly. There is a real mechanic underneath, and once you understand it the pricing pages stop looking arbitrary.

Every time you send a message, the app does not just send your sentence to the model. It sends the relevant conversation so far, plus whatever it remembers about you, so the reply makes sense in context. That means the cost of answering you rises as the thread gets longer and as the app knows more about you. A one line greeting on day one is cheap. The same greeting in month four, with four months of your life attached to it, is not.

So the apps facing the highest per-message cost are precisely the ones with the deepest memory, which is an uncomfortable incentive. It is also why a companion app that meters heavily often has better recall than a cheap one that does not: it is paying for what it remembers about you and passing that along.

Unlimited messages, credits and daily caps: how to tell them apart

Three billing shapes cover essentially every app in this category, and you can identify which one you are looking at in under a minute.

A flat subscription charges one amount and unlocks the product. Your bill in a heavy month is identical to your bill in a quiet one. A daily cap gives you a set number of messages that resets, usually on a free tier, sometimes on a cheap paid one. A credit or coin model charges a modest monthly fee and then bills each expensive action from a balance you top up, which is the model that produces the surprise invoices people complain about.

The hybrid is the one to watch. A subscription that still meters images and voice looks like a flat plan on the pricing page and behaves like a meter in practice. Auto top-up makes it worse, because it refills a spent balance without asking you a second time.

• Look for a store selling coins, gems, tokens or credits separately from the plan
• Check whether the advertised monthly price assumes you pay for a full year
• Find out whether images and voice notes come out of the plan or out of a balance
• Find the auto top-up setting and decide about it before you need it
• Read the fair-use clause in the terms, which is where an unpublished cap usually lives

How to check an unlimited claim before you pay

Since the number is not published, test it. This takes one evening and it is the only evidence that has ever been worth having.

Open the app and look for a shop before you look at anything else. If coins, gems or credits are for sale, the answer is already no, whatever the plan is called, and the only remaining question is what draws them down. Then read the terms for the phrase "fair use" or "reasonable use", because an uncapped plan with a fair-use clause is a capped plan with an unpublished number.

After that, use it properly for one long evening. Send a couple of hundred messages, ask for a few images or voice notes if those are part of what you are paying for, and watch for three things: replies getting shorter, replies getting slower, or a queue appearing at peak time. Soft throttling is far more common than a hard stop, and it is what most people are actually experiencing when they say an app "limits" them.

• Is there a coin, credit or token store separate from the subscription?
• Does the wording "fair use" or "reasonable use" appear in the terms?
• After two hundred messages, are replies shorter, slower or queued?
• Do images and voice notes still work at the end of that evening?
• Can you cancel without contacting support?

Unlimited messages and long-term memory pull against each other

This is the trade-off nobody in the category writes about, and it is worth understanding before you pick on price.

An app with real long-term memory attaches more context to every reply, so every reply costs it more. An app with a short memory is cheap to run and can afford to promise unlimited anything, because each message it answers is small. That is why some of the most generous "unlimited" offers come from apps that forget you between sessions, and why the companions with the best recall tend to charge more or meter something.

We will say plainly that Nomi and Kindroid are genuinely strong on raw long-term memory, stronger than most of the category, and if deep recall is the only thing you care about they belong on your shortlist. What we do differently is refuse to solve the cost problem by putting a meter between you and a conversation.
