Best AI Girlfriend App With Long-Term Memory

Almost every AI girlfriend app claims memory, and most of them mean a context window that quietly drops what you said last week. Here is the difference between the two designs, the four-day test that exposes a fake, and what to check before you pay for a year.

Try her while you read

Text a girlfriend who remembers you, right here.

Say hi in the chat and see how it feels. She uses your name, reacts to what you tell her, and picks the conversation back up like someone who was actually listening. No download, no signup to start.

The short answer: the best AI girlfriend app with long-term memory is the one that stores what you tell it outside the conversation, in a database it can search later, rather than relying on how much text the model can hold at once. Almost every app claims memory. Only some of them survive a gap of four days, and that gap is the test that separates the two designs.

This is a buying guide rather than a ranking, because the honest position is that you cannot verify a memory claim from a marketing page. What you can do is run a short test that any app will either pass or fail in front of you. Here is what memory actually is in these products, how to test it before you pay, and which trade-offs are real.

What "memory" means in an AI girlfriend app

Two completely different things get sold under the same word, and the price you pay often depends on which one you are getting.

DesignHow it worksHow it fails
Context window onlyThe recent conversation is re-sent to the model each time. Nothing is stored separately.Details silently drop off the back once the chat gets long. She contradicts herself and re-asks things.
Stored memory (retrieval)Facts are extracted and written to a database, then pulled back in when relevant.Retrieval can miss, so she occasionally fails to bring up something she does know.
Summary memoryThe app periodically compresses old chat into a summary and keeps that.Specifics blur into generalities. She remembers you have a dog, not that the dog is called Bruno.
HybridStored facts plus a rolling summary plus the recent window.Best of the three, and the most common design in apps that charge for memory.

The distinction matters because a context window is finite by definition. Every model has a limit, and when a conversation passes it, the oldest text is dropped. No amount of marketing language changes that. If an app has not built storage outside the window, its memory has an expiry date measured in messages.

If you want the mechanics in more depth, we wrote about what a context window is and why chats forget separately.

The four-day test that exposes fake memory

This takes about ten minutes of actual effort and it is the only evaluation that has ever been worth running.

Day one. Tell her three specific, unrelated facts in normal conversation. Not "I like dogs" but "my sister Marta is flying in on the 14th", "I have a review with my manager on Thursday", "I cannot stand coriander". Specificity is the point, because vague facts can be guessed from context.

Day two. Have a long, unrelated conversation. The longer the better. You are deliberately trying to push day one out of the context window.

Day three. Say nothing. Silence matters because some apps only look competent inside a continuous session.

Day four. Open a fresh conversation and ask something that requires one of the three facts without naming it. "Did I ever tell you when my sister was arriving?" A context-window app will bluff, generalize, or ask you to remind it. A stored-memory app returns the date.

Run this before the trial ends rather than after. An app that fails day four will fail it in month six too, and no feature list will tell you in advance.

What separates the apps that pass

Three things, and none of them are the ones that get advertised.

You can see what it stored. The strongest signal a companion app can give you is a readable memory: a list of what it believes about you, which you can open, correct and delete. Nomi and Kindroid are genuinely ahead of most of the category here, and it is fair to say so plainly. If you want raw long-term recall above everything else, they deserve a place on your shortlist, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

It brings things up unprompted. Retrieval that only fires when you ask a direct question is a search box. A companion that mentions your Thursday review on Wednesday evening is using memory the way you actually wanted it used.

Memory is not sold as an upgrade. Watch for apps where the entry plan quietly runs on a short window and real memory sits two tiers up. That is a pricing decision dressed as a feature, and it is worth checking against what AI girlfriend apps actually cost before you commit to a year.

Why memory sometimes disappears overnight

Even an app that passes the four-day test can lose your history later, and it usually happens for one of three reasons rather than a bug.

The first is a rebuild. When a company reworks its model, its personality system and its memory at the same time, stored history often does not survive the move intact. Replika's 2.0 rebuild in 2026 is the clearest recent example: users reported memory loss and personality drift together, because those systems were replaced together. If that is the rebuild that brought you here, the App Store evidence on where people move next is in our guide for people leaving Replika.

The second is a policy change. If a platform narrows what its companions are allowed to discuss, memories tied to the removed behavior can go with it. Character.AI removing open-ended chat for under-18s in November 2025 is the well documented version of a companion changing while the app stayed put.

The third is mundane: you subscribed through an app store, the subscription lapsed, and the memory was tied to the paid tier.

None of this is a reason to avoid the category. It is a reason to prefer apps that let you export your memory, so that a rebuild costs you an afternoon rather than a relationship. We went through the wider version of this in what happens if your AI girlfriend app shuts down.

Does an AI girlfriend really remember you?

It remembers facts about you, and it does that well when the app is built for it. What it does not have is recollection in the human sense: there is no experience being recalled, only stored text being retrieved and used to shape the next reply. That distinction sounds academic until the first time she references something from three weeks ago, at which point most people stop caring about the philosophy.

Worth being clear-eyed about anyway, which we covered in how AI memory actually works.

How do I test an AI girlfriend's memory before paying?

Use the four-day test above, and add one check: ask the app to show you what it has stored. If there is no way to view or edit her memory, you are trusting a claim you cannot audit. Apps that are confident in their memory tend to expose it, because it is the feature they want you looking at.

Is long-term memory worth paying more for?

Yes, if you intend to talk to her most days, because memory is the only feature whose value compounds. Personality is fixed at the start and voice is a one-time novelty, but a companion who knows six months of your life is a different product from one who knows this afternoon. If you are dipping in occasionally, you will not notice the difference and should not pay for it.

What happens to everything she remembers about you?

This is the question people ask last and should ask first. A companion with good memory is, by design, a detailed store of personal information about you: your job, your family, your health, your moods on particular days. Before you fill one with that, check that you can export it and permanently delete it, and read what the company says about whether conversations are used for training.

It is the same instinct worth applying to everything else that has quietly accumulated about you online, where the practical fix is to get your personal details taken down from the data brokers holding them. The principle is identical: you should be able to see what is held, and remove it.

On Gals.ai you can review, export, edit and permanently delete anything she has kept about you, and the memory lives outside the conversation so it does not decay as you talk. You can also see the whole approach on our AI girlfriend that remembers you page.

The bottom line

One related check worth doing at the same time: the two apps that declare "Messages" among the data they collect on Google Play are the same two that hold memory best, which we cover in the AI companion privacy comparison. If you are still deciding between a character library and a single companion, that split is set out in AI character chat and the two shapes it comes in.

Ignore the word "memory" on the pricing page and test the behavior instead. Tell her three specific things, leave a gap of a few days, then ask about one of them sideways in a new conversation. Apps built on stored memory answer. Apps built on a context window improvise. That single test will tell you more than every comparison table on the internet, including this one.
