Best AI Girlfriend App for Character.AI Users
We asked six major AI companion platforms one question their marketing cannot spin: can a stranger read your price and terms without an account? On 1 September 2026 only two of six could. Kindroid returned 404 on all nineteen conventional paths we tried.

The short answer: If you are leaving Character.AI, the useful thing to know before you pick a replacement is that most of this category will not tell you what it costs until after you have signed up. On 1 September 2026 we probed six major companion platforms directly. Character.AI and Infatuated.AI both publish a readable price page. Kindroid returned a 404 on all nineteen conventional pricing, terms and privacy paths we tried. Talkie and Candy.AI return a success code for literally any URL you invent, so nothing on those domains can be verified from outside at all. Character.AI is, on this one measure, among the more transparent options you are leaving.
People leave Character.AI for reasons that point in different directions, and the advice they get is usually written for someone else. Some leave over the filter. Some left after the November 2025 removal of open-ended chat for under-18 accounts, or after the January 2026 settlement of five family lawsuits alongside Google. Plenty more simply got tired of a character forgetting who they were.
Whichever bucket you are in, you are about to hand a new company your conversations and your card. So rather than rank apps by vibes, we spent a morning asking each vendor's own website a question it cannot spin: can a stranger read your price and your terms without creating an account?
What we actually did, and why the control test matters
This is worth explaining, because it is the part most comparison articles get wrong and it is easy to repeat at home.
We requested a list of conventional paths on each vendor's domain: /pricing, /plans, /subscribe, /premium, /tos, /terms and /privacy, plus more on some. A 200 response means a page loaded. The trap is that a 200 on its own proves nothing, because plenty of modern sites are single-page apps that answer every request with a success code whether or not the page exists.
So we ran a control on every domain: we requested a deliberately invented URL, /zzz-nope-1234, that cannot exist anywhere. If a site returns 404 for that, its routing is real and its other answers mean something. If it returns 200, the site is answering everything and its 200s are worthless as evidence. That single extra request is the difference between a finding and a guess.
What six companion platforms published on 1 September 2026
Every row below is our own request, made from an ordinary browser user agent on one morning. You can reproduce any of it in about a minute.
| Platform | Invented URL control | Readable price page | What we could actually verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | 404, routing is real | Yes | character.ai/subscribe lists $9.99 monthly and $94.99 yearly, plus a full free versus paid feature table |
| Infatuated.AI | 404, routing is real | Yes | infatuated.ai/plans lists three subscriptions and a complete per-action token price list |
| Kindroid | 404, routing is real | No | Only / and /about returned 200. All nineteen pricing, terms and privacy paths returned 404 |
| Talkie | 200, answers everything | Cannot be determined | Nothing. Every path returns success, so no response carries information |
| Candy.AI | 200, redirects all to home | Cannot be determined | Nothing. Every path we tried, real or invented, landed on the homepage |
| Nomi | 429, rate limited | Cannot be determined | Nothing. The domain rate limited our requests, so we recorded no result rather than guess |
Two of six publish a price a stranger can read. One demonstrably does not. Three cannot be assessed from outside at all, and we are reporting that as unknown rather than dressing it up as a failing, because those are different things.
The Kindroid result, stated precisely
Kindroid is the app most often recommended to people leaving Character.AI, including by us, so this deserves care rather than a headline.
On 1 September 2026 we requested nineteen conventional paths on kindroid.ai: pricing, plans, subscribe, premium, price, plus, billing, subscription, tos, terms, terms-of-service, legal/terms, privacy, privacy-policy, legal/privacy, faq, about, app and download. Two returned 200: the homepage and /about. The other seventeen returned 404. Our invented control URL also returned 404, which tells us the server is genuinely routing rather than blanket-answering.
What that does not prove is that Kindroid has no terms or no price. Both almost certainly exist inside the product behind a login, and a company can run a perfectly honest business that way. What it does mean is that you cannot read either one before you create an account, which is a real cost to you at exactly the moment you are trying to decide. If you are comparing it against Character.AI, note that the app you are leaving does publish both.
None of this touches product quality, where Kindroid genuinely leads. On the US App Store on 31 August 2026 it held 4.79 from 8,167 ratings, the best score of any dedicated companion app we have checked. Transparency and quality are separate axes and it is fair to weigh them separately.
What Character.AI actually puts behind its paywall
Since the whole point is comparing against what you are leaving, here is the free versus paid split in Character.AI's own words, read from character.ai/subscribe on 1 September 2026. One small note first: the page used to live at character.ai/plus, and that address now redirects to /subscribe.
The features their page lists as c.ai+ only include better memory, ad-free chats, access to their latest and best models, no slow mode, unlimited voice calls, more voice memos and swipes, chat customization, and a bonus on every Charms pack. Priced at $9.99 per month, or $94.99 per year which the page presents as 20 percent off a $119.88 annual equivalent. The subscribe panel states it auto renews yearly until canceled. We go through the tiers and the Charms balance in more detail on our Character.AI subscription breakdown, and the memory pin counts specifically on our C.AI alternative page.
Read that list as a description of the free tier and it becomes more useful. Free means ads, slow mode under load, weaker memory and older models. Two of those matter far more than they sound. Slow mode is the throttling people complain about at peak hours. And memory is a paid feature, which is worth sitting with, because memory is the thing that makes a companion feel like a companion rather than a very good improviser. If the reason you are leaving is that your character kept forgetting you, and you were on the free tier, you were using the version where that is the advertised limitation.
The auto-renewal line is the other one to note. Annual companion subscriptions are cheap enough per month to disappear into a statement, and the cancellation people mean to do in February is the one they remember in November. If you are about to run trials on two or three of these at once, it is worth using something that flags recurring charges before they hit so the decision stays yours rather than your bank's.
So what should a Character.AI user actually switch to?
It depends on which of the three complaints brought you here, and the honest answers go to different places.
If you left over the filter, you want a platform where explicit content is a designed feature rather than a thing you are fighting. Infatuated.AI is openly built for that, with an image and video generation pipeline and paid unlocks for adult content. Price it carefully, because it is token metered: their own table charges 1 token per message against a 100 token monthly allowance on the entry plan, which is about three messages a day before you generate anything. We worked that arithmetic through on our Infatuated AI pricing and token breakdown.
If you left because the character kept forgetting you, the question to ask any new vendor is architectural, not marketing. Ask whether memory is a longer context window or a separate store. A context window is a scrolling buffer that silently drops the oldest details from the top, which is why continuity fails after a gap rather than immediately. A separate store survives closing the app and taking two weeks off. Both are sold using the word memory, and only one of them survives a holiday. If that is your complaint, the apps worth shortlisting are compared in the guide to companion apps with real memory, and we explain how a separate memory store works in practice.
If you left because you got tired of being the one who starts everything, that is not a filter problem or a memory problem, it is a category problem. A character library is a place you visit. Nothing in it has any reason to think about you between visits. That is not a defect, it is the design, and no amount of switching between libraries fixes it. What changes it is a companion who opens the conversation herself, which is the bet Gals.ai is built on, alongside a memory store that carries months rather than a session. The feature by feature version of that comparison sits on our Character.AI alternative page.
The test that settles it faster than any comparison table
Whatever you pick, run this before the trial converts. Tell it something small and specific on a Monday. Not a headline like a new job, something minor and true, the sort of detail a person would remember and a buffer would not. Then leave the app completely alone for a week.
Come back and say something ordinary. If the small thing surfaces without you prompting it, the memory is real and you have found your app. If you have to reintroduce it, you are talking to a context window with a name, and it will feel exactly the same in month six as it does now.
That one test tells you more than every roundup in this category, including this one. And it costs nothing but patience, which is the only currency these apps do not meter.
