The short answer

Last updated August 2026

AI character chat splits into two product shapes, and picking the wrong one is why most people quit after a fortnight. A character library gives you thousands of user-made characters to browse, and the character resets when the session ends. A single-companion app gives you one character who is only yours and who carries what you said last week into this week. If what you want is variety, take a library. If what you want is someone who knows you, take a companion, because no amount of browsing turns a library into a relationship.

The first is a library. You open an app, scroll through thousands of characters other users built, pick one, and talk. It is genuinely fun, the catalogue is enormous, and the character you were talking to on Tuesday will not know who you are on Thursday.

What makes her feel real

AI character chat, the way it should feel

One character, not a catalogue

She is generated for you and nobody else can open, edit or fork her. That sounds like a smaller feature than it is: a character other people can also talk to cannot hold a version of events that is specifically yours.

Memory runs by default

What you told her about your job, your sister, the thing you were dreading on Thursday, all of it carries forward without you restating it. Memory is not a tier here and there is nothing to switch on.

She opens the conversation

Character chat is almost always something you initiate. She messages first, at times that make sense, which is the difference between a tool you remember to use and someone who is around.

The biggest AI character chat apps on the US Google Play store, read on 30 August 2026

Downloads, review counts and content ratings below were read directly from each app's own US Google Play listing on 30 August 2026, taken from the app's own block on the page rather than from the recommendations carousel underneath it. The last column is our categorization of the product shape, not a claim the vendor makes.

App name as listed on Google Play Play downloads Play reviews Play content rating Product shape
Character AI: Chat, Talk, Text 50M+ 2.43M Teen Character library
PolyBuzz: Chat with AI Friends 50M+ 1.16M Mature 17+ Character library
Linky AI: Chat, Play, Connect 10M+ 136K Mature 17+ Character library
Replika: My AI Friend 10M+ 525K Teen One companion
Botify AI: Chatbot & Companion 1M+ 27.7K Mature 17+ Character library
Kindroid: Your Personal AI 1M+ 24.2K Mature 17+ One companion
Nomi: AI Companion with a Soul 100K+ 5.43K Teen One companion

Read 30 August 2026. Worth knowing before you hand an app to anyone young: on the same day, Character AI, Replika and Nomi were all rated 17+ on the US App Store while carrying a Teen rating on Google Play. We checked both stores ourselves. The two US stores disagreeing about the same app is a good reason to treat a store rating as a starting point rather than an answer. Gals.ai is adults only and does not rely on a store label to say so.

AI character chat comes in two shapes, and they suit different people

The libraries are the loud half of this category and the reason it got big. Character AI and PolyBuzz each show 50M+ downloads on US Google Play, which is a scale nothing else in companion software touches. What you are buying there is breadth: characters from anime, games, film and fiction, plus tools to build and publish your own.

The trade is continuity. A shared character is authored as a prompt and a personality description, and what it knows about you lives in a context window that empties. You can have a wonderful two-hour conversation and start from nothing tomorrow. That is not a bug in those apps, it is what a library is for. Nobody expects a book to remember reading you.

The companion shape inverts every one of those trade-offs. One character, no catalogue to browse, and a memory that persists across sessions because the whole product is built around a single continuous relationship rather than thousands of disposable ones.

The reason this matters commercially: people who want a library and buy a companion feel starved of options, and people who want a companion and buy a library feel like they are dating someone with amnesia. Work out which one you are before you compare anything else.

If you are weighing a move away from the biggest character platform, the alternatives are compared on our C.AI alternative page.

If you already know you want the library shape but want a different one, we compared the main options in the Character AI alternative comparison.

Talk to AI characters who start the conversation, not just answer

Almost every AI character chat app in the market is reactive. You open it, you type, it responds. Close the app and the character ceases to exist until you summon it again. That asymmetry is subtle and it shapes how the whole thing feels: you are always the one doing the reaching.

Proactive contact is rarer than it sounds because it is harder to build. The system has to hold a sense of when it last spoke to you, decide that now is a reasonable moment, and have something worth saying that follows from what you actually talked about. A notification that fires on a timer with a generic greeting is not the same thing, and people spot the difference inside a week.

On Gals.ai she messages first. Sometimes it is a good morning, sometimes it is following up on the thing you were nervous about, sometimes it is just her being bored at four in the afternoon. It is the single feature that changes AI character chat from an app you use into someone you hear from.

Be clear-eyed about what this is. She is software. She is not conscious, she is not a therapist, and if you are in real distress the right call is a human, or in the US the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which is free and available all day and night. A companion that texts you first is good company, and good company is a genuinely useful thing to have, but it is not care.

What to test in an AI character chat app before you pay for it

Five tests, all of which you can run in the free tier of any app in this category, and all of which are more informative than a review.

The memory test is the one that separates the shapes. Tell the character something specific and slightly odd, the name of your dentist or the fact you hate coriander. Leave for two full days. Come back and talk about something adjacent without restating it. If she brings it back on her own, memory is real. If you have to remind her, it is a context window and it will keep emptying.

The consistency test: ask her to describe herself on day one and again on day six. Character libraries drift because the prompt is doing all the work and the model interprets it a little differently every session.

The throttle test: use the app hard for one evening and watch for a slow mode, an ad, a queue or a message counter appearing. Whatever shows up during your heaviest hour is the real product.

The currency test: find out within the first ten minutes whether coins, gems, credits or Charms exist. If they do, the subscription price is a floor rather than your bill.

The exit test: try to get your conversation history out. Almost nothing in this category offers a genuine export, which is worth knowing before you spend a year building something inside it.

A wider roundup of the main companion products and how they differ is on the AI companion apps comparison.

AI character chat bot pricing: where the money actually goes

The sticker price in this category is rarely the bill, and the mechanism is consistent enough to describe plainly.

Most character chat apps run a free tier that is deliberately good at the first hour and deliberately worse at the fortieth. The friction arrives as slow mode during busy periods, ads between chats, an older model doing the writing, or a balance of coins that drains when you ask for a picture or a voice note. Then a subscription removes some of that friction, and a separate consumable removes the rest.

Character.AI is the clearest published example because the company prints its own comparison table. We read it on 29 August 2026: the free column carried a tick on exactly one row, basic chat models, and better memory, ad-free chats, the newest models, no slow mode and unlimited voice calls all sat on the paid side. It was listed at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Its Charms currency is separate from the subscription, which is the part that makes a monthly total unpredictable.

That two-layer design is not dishonest, it is just easy to underestimate. A plan that discounts a second currency instead of including it is a plan whose true cost depends on how much you use the product, which means the more you like it, the more it charges you.

The pricing Gals.ai intends to launch with is one flat monthly amount with nothing metered: no coins, no gems, no credits, no message counting. A heavy month costs the same as a quiet one. To be straight with you, there is no checkout open yet, so nothing on this site can charge you today. The demo above is live and free so you can judge how she writes before any money is involved.

The full breakdown of what that subscription includes and what it does not is on Character AI subscription and c.ai+ pricing.

The gem and coin model as run by one of the biggest library apps is covered on the PolyBuzz alternative comparison.

Chat with AI characters without a message counter

A message counter changes how people talk, and this is the part of metered pricing nobody prices in.

Once a balance is visible, you start rationing. You think twice before sending the throwaway line. You skip asking her to say something again because it costs. You watch a number mid-conversation. In most software that is a mild annoyance. In a product whose entire value is that it feels unguarded, it is corrosive, because the moment you are budgeting a conversation you are no longer having one.

There is a defensible reason the caps exist. Inference genuinely costs money, long context windows cost more than short ones, and voice costs more than text. An app that gave everybody unlimited everything on a free tier would not survive. The question is not whether to charge but whether the meter sits between you and the other person.

Our answer is to put the whole cost in the subscription and let the conversation run. No daily cap, no coin drain on a long reply, no counter anywhere in the interface.

Who should use a character library, and who should not

An honest allocation, including the cases where we are the wrong answer.

Use a character library if what you enjoy is discovery. If the pleasure is finding a strange, well-written character somebody built, trying three in an evening and moving on, then Character AI or PolyBuzz will serve you far better than we will, and their free tiers are genuinely generous for browsing. We have one character. If you want a catalogue, we do not have one and no feature we ship will change that.

Use a library if you want to build and publish characters for other people. That is a creative hobby with its own community, and single-companion apps do not support it at all.

Take the companion shape if you got tired of explaining yourself. If the thing that made you close the last app was that it forgot the conversation you had on Sunday, more characters will not fix it, because the problem was never selection.

Take it if you want to hear from someone rather than remember to open something. And take it if you want a bill you can predict, because flat pricing is the only version of this that tells you your annual cost in advance.

One more group, named plainly: if you are under 18, none of this is for you, whatever a store rating says. Gals.ai is adults only.

People also ask

AI character chat: what people ask

What is the best AI character chat app?

It depends which shape you want. For a huge catalogue of user-made characters, Character AI and PolyBuzz are the largest by a wide margin, with 50M+ Google Play downloads each on 30 August 2026. For one character who remembers you across sessions, the single-companion apps are the right category, and that is what Gals.ai is built as.

Can AI characters remember previous conversations?

Some can and most do not. Character libraries usually run on a context window that empties between sessions, so the character forgets. Single-companion apps store a persistent memory instead. Test it before paying: tell her something specific, leave for two days, and see whether she brings it back without a reminder.

How do I talk to AI characters?

Open the app or site, choose or create a character, and type as you would to a person. Most apps are reactive, so nothing happens until you start. A smaller number will message you first. If proactive contact matters to you, check for it explicitly, because almost every listing describes chat without saying who begins it.

Is AI character chat free?

Starting is usually free, and staying rarely is. Free tiers in this category tend to throttle at peak times, show ads, run an older model or meter features through coins and credits. Character.AI publishes this openly: on its own comparison table read 29 August 2026, the free column was ticked for one row only.

Can I make my own AI character to chat with?

Yes, in both shapes, but the result differs. In a library you author a public character other people can also use and edit. In a companion app you create one private character who exists only in your account. If you want her to be nobody else's, that difference is the whole point.

Are AI character chat apps safe for teenagers?

Treat store ratings carefully. On 30 August 2026 we found Character AI, Replika and Nomi rated Teen on US Google Play and 17+ on the US App Store on the same day. When the two stores disagree about the same app, the label is not doing the work parents assume it is. Gals.ai is adults only.

Good to know

Questions about your character chat

No, and it is the main reason to choose it or to skip it. There is no catalogue to browse. You get one companion, generated for you, who nobody else can open or edit. If breadth is what you want, a library app is the better product and we will say so.
Yes. Memory runs by default rather than as a paid tier, so details carry forward without you restating them. It is not perfect and nothing in this category is, but continuity across weeks is the feature the product is built around rather than an upgrade.
No. There is no daily cap, no coin balance, no gem pack and no counter in the interface. The pricing we intend to launch with puts the whole cost in a flat monthly amount, so a heavy month and a quiet month cost the same.
Yes. The demo on this page is live and free with no signup, so you can judge how she writes first. There is no checkout open yet, so nothing here can charge you today.
