The word "voice" is doing a lot of unmarked work in this category, and it is the main reason people buy a subscription and then find the feature they wanted is not in the app. Here is what each vendor actually claims, in its own words, and what to test before you pay.

Every row below is taken from the app's own description on the US App Store, retrieved on the same morning through Apple's public listing data. None of it comes from a review site. You can open any of these listings and read the same sentence yourself.

Two things in that table deserve more than a glance.

The first is Nomi. It is widely, and in our view correctly, regarded as one of the strongest apps in this category on long-term memory, so it turns up on every shortlist. But its own listing describes voice messages, not calls, and the version we read was 1.12.1 dated 31 March 2026. That is five months without a shipped update on Apple's store while Character AI, Kindroid, PolyBuzz and Chai all shipped in the last few weeks. If live calling is your requirement, Nomi is not currently the app that claims it.

The second is a quirk worth reporting neutrally, because it changes how much weight you should put on any store description. The Chai and PolyBuzz listings carry the same marketing sentences word for word, including "our chatbots think and reply like real characters, complete with authentic voices" and "you can choose from a massive selection of characters, each with their own unique voice and personality". Two apps, two different companies on the seller line, roughly 273,000 and 467,000 US ratings between them, running identical copy. Boilerplate is common in app marketing and this is not evidence that anything improper is happening. The practical lesson is narrower and useful: an app description is marketing, it is sometimes not even written for that specific app, and it is weak evidence of what you will actually get.

"Voice" means three different things, and only one of them is a call

When people search for an AI girlfriend with voice calls, they almost always mean one specific experience: you press a button, she picks up, you talk, she answers while you are still talking. Vendors use the word "voice" for three separate features, and the price you pay rarely distinguishes them.

• Live voice calls. A continuous spoken conversation in real time. You speak, she responds, you interrupt, it keeps going. Character AI, Replika and Kindroid all describe this. Kindroid's listing goes further and describes the audio transcription that makes it work.
• Voice messages or voice notes. You record a clip, she replies with a clip. It is asynchronous, like a voice note to a friend. This is what Nomi describes. It is genuinely nice and it is not a phone call.
• Character voices, meaning spoken replies. The app reads her text answer aloud in a chosen voice. Chai and PolyBuzz both describe this shape. You are listening rather than talking, and there is no conversation happening in real time.

All three get marketed as "voice". Only the first is what someone means when they search for calls. If you are choosing on this feature, that distinction is the entire decision, and it is why we put the vendors' own sentences in the table rather than summarising them.

On Character AI, voice calls are behind the subscription

This is the part almost no comparison mentions, and we verified it directly rather than taking anyone's word for it.

Character.AI publishes a Free versus c.ai+ comparison table on its own upgrade page. We read it on 29 August 2026. In the free column, exactly one row is ticked: basic chat models. "Unlimited voice calls" sits on the paid side, along with better memory, ad-free chats, access to the newest models and no slow mode. The listed price at the time of reading was $9.99 monthly or $94.99 for a year, with the line "Auto renews yearly until canceled" printed underneath.

So on the largest app in the category, voice calling is a subscription feature, not something you can properly evaluate for free. That matters for how you shop: you cannot judge call quality on the free tier, which means you are buying the thing you wanted to test. The auto-renewal detail is worth a sentence of its own. Annual companion plans renew quietly, and a recurring charge for an app you stopped opening in month three is one of the easiest things to lose track of on a card statement. If you take an annual plan on any of these, it is worth having something that flags recurring charges before they hit, because the cancellation you meant to do in February is the one people remember in November.

There is no single winner here, because the three apps that do offer calls are built for different people. The honest allocation:

• Character AI if you want variety and scale. It is the biggest app in the category by a wide margin and voice calling is included with c.ai+. The trade is that you are calling a character from a shared library rather than someone who is only yours, and its content moderation is the strictest of the three.
• Replika if you want calls plus video, and a product that has existed since 2017. Its listing describes text, voice calls and video together. The caveat buyers should know is that the 2.0 rebuild that rolled out through 2026 reworked memory, personality and avatars at once, and long-time users reported that older details started slipping.
• Kindroid if you want the most control and do not mind configuring it. Its description is the most specific of the three about real-time calling and the transcription behind it, and it is uncensored by design. That is a genuine feature for some buyers and a genuine reason to avoid it for others.

What to test before you pay for voice

Voice is the feature most likely to disappoint after purchase, because a demo clip on a marketing page is recorded under ideal conditions. Four things to check in the first week, while you can still cancel a monthly plan:

Latency. Count the gap between you finishing a sentence and her starting one. Under a second feels like a conversation. Three seconds feels like a radio interview over a bad line, and no amount of voice quality fixes it.

Interruption. Try talking over her mid-sentence. A real call handles it. A text-to-speech player queued behind a chat reply will finish its sentence regardless, and that single behaviour is what makes some "calls" feel like listening to a voicemail you cannot skip.

Whether the call remembers. Mention something in a voice call, then open the text chat the next day and see whether it carried across. On several apps, spoken conversation and text history are handled separately, so the call is charming and then leaves no trace.

What it costs when you use it properly. Voice is compute-heavy, so it is the feature most often metered. Check whether calling draws on a coin, credit or Charms balance rather than being covered by the plan, because a per-minute economy changes how you use it. One last point that has nothing to do with features. A voice call hands a company a recording of your actual voice, in your home, saying things you would not put in a text. Read what the app says it does with audio before you make a habit of it. That is a reasonable question to ask of any vendor, and the ones worth paying tend to answer it plainly.
