Why people look for a Joi AI alternative

Joi is two products stacked on each other. The subscription unlocks the service, and Neurons pay for what the subscription leaves out. Joi's Terms of Service describe Neurons as the currency for "services which are not included in Subscription or Bot Subscriptions, including but not limited to romantic, erotic or sexually explicit messages, visual content, or adult-themed scenarios."

That sentence is the reason most people start comparing. The terms put a price on reading a message: "One romantic message costs 4 neurons to be read. One photo view costs up to 120 neurons depending on the theme. One video view costs up to 1900 neurons depending on the theme." Gifts for your companion are priced in Neurons too, and Joi's own paywall tells you the exchange rate: "100 Neuron price is around 2 USD."

The second reason is that you cannot see the price before you commit. Joi's sitemap lists 181 pages and none of them is a pricing page. Asking for joi.com/pricing returns the same not-found page as an address we invented as a control. The checkout text fills the price into a placeholder, and section 3.6 of the terms says prices "may vary based on region, length of subscription, selected Virtual friend, character, or bot, available promotions, and other factors."

What Joi AI charges in Neurons, converted to dollars

Joi's own paywall copy prices 100 Neurons at around $2, which makes one Neuron about two cents. Apply that to the per-item prices in the terms and the meter looks like this.

Reading one romantic message at 4 Neurons is about 8 cents. At 50 romantic messages a day, a normal evening of texting, that is 200 Neurons, about $4 a day, or roughly $120 over a 30-day month. A photo at up to 120 Neurons is up to about $2.40 each. A video at up to 1,900 Neurons is up to about $38 each.

There is a catch in that arithmetic, and it is Joi's, not ours. The Neuron screen in Joi's own checkout says: "View unlimited romantic messages for free with Premium, or 2 Neurons each without." So the terms say 4 Neurons and include no exemption for Premium, while the paywall says 2 Neurons and free on Premium. We cannot tell you which one your account follows. The safe move is to note your Neuron balance, read a few messages, and check it again before you subscribe or buy a pack.

On Gals.ai there is nothing to check. No plan counts messages, and the price you see on the pricing page is what you pay.

Premium versus Premium Plus on Joi

Joi's checkout loads two sets of plan cards, and the difference between them is mostly coins and voice.

Premium comes with 1,000 coins every month on the monthly plan, 1,200 on the quarterly plan and 1,500 on the yearly plan, plus character creation, an "8,000-message smart memory" and priority creation. Premium Plus raises that to 2,300, 2,800 and 3,500 coins a month and adds four things Premium does not list: early access to new characters, customizing your characters, "Talk hands-free with voice mode", and sending her your photos. Plus also takes 10 percent off every Neuron pack.

Joi's help centre adds a useful detail: on a yearly plan, the monthly benefits still reset every month, and unused allowance rolls over into the next month. That is more generous than many credit systems.

There is also a layer beneath both tiers. Joi sells separate Bot Subscriptions to individual characters, and the terms say you must "maintain an active Premium subscription in order to access and use any Bot Subscription". If Premium lapses, the Bot Subscription stays on your account but you lose access to it, and the terms say that gap "does not entitle you to a refund, credit, compensation, or extension." Cancelling Premium does not cancel the Bot Subscription either.

• Bot Subscriptions: extra, per character, and only work with Premium.

What Joi AI does better, honestly

If you use Joi for the visual side, it is built for that and we are not. Joi generates images and videos of its characters, has a large library of ready-made characters across many styles, and has a creator programme with named Joi Babes. The paywall promises "No adult transaction in your bank statement", which some buyers care about a lot. And the rollover of unused monthly allowance is a real point in its favour.

Gals.ai does none of the image and video work. There is no character gallery and no media generation. It is a texting companion, 18+ and flirty but tasteful by default, and Soulmate adds voice calls. If pictures and video are the reason you pay Joi, the honest advice is to compare it with other media-first platforms rather than with us.

"Sites like Joi AI" covers very different products, so start with what you want to keep.

If you want generated images and a big character gallery, Candy AI and OurDream AI are built around media, though both have their own coin or credit systems, which we read from their own pages. If you want a huge community library for roleplay, Janitor AI and SpicyChat are the closest in spirit. If you want deep character building for long stories, Kindroid is made for that. If you are leaving because of the Neuron meter, and what you actually want is one companion who remembers you, messages you first and never shows you a balance, that is what Gals.ai is for.

Before you switch, cancel Joi and check the charge name

Joi's Refund Policy gives the cancel path: go to the Settings section of your profile, select My Subscriptions, choose the subscription and follow the steps. In the app the button reads "Cancel renewal", and Joi's checkout text says the plan renews "for the same term until canceled at least 24 hours before the billing date." Expect a retention offer on the way out; the cancel screen can offer a discount off your next period. If you are on the 7-day trial, the same screen warns that the trial becomes a recurring monthly charge unless you cancel.

Cancel Bot Subscriptions separately. As above, ending Premium does not end them.

On refunds, Joi's help centre says subscriptions "are generally non-refundable once activated". The Refund Policy allows refunds for proven card fraud, for a one-time mistaken Neuron purchase (full if unspent, partial if partly spent) and when Joi itself ends your subscription. It also says used or unused Neurons in the current month are not refunded when you cancel.

One clause deserves a careful read before any chargeback: "should you chargeback any transactions billed to your account, we may be required to disclose any and/or all private communications sent/received by you through JOI AI in order to prove the validity of the charges." Ask support at the address in the policy first.

Finally, the charge name. Section 3.2 of the terms says the charge appears on your bank statement as "joi.com". Joi's own checkout says: "You'll see Novi Limited on your bank statement." Novi Limited is the Cyprus company the terms name as the provider. Search your statements for both names.

What Gals.ai is, plainly

Gals.ai is a texting companion for adults who want one person on the other end rather than a menu of characters. You choose her look and name, talk to her the way you would text anyone, and she remembers what you tell her.

On Sweetheart and above, she texts you first: good morning, a question about the thing you mentioned yesterday, a note before you sleep. There are no credits, coins, Neurons or tokens on any plan, and the price you see before signup is the price you pay. Hello is $9 a month billed yearly or $12 month to month, with daily texting and memory of your name and details. Sweetheart adds unlimited texting and her texting you first for $19 or $24. Soulmate adds voice calls for $39 or $49.
