Kindroid vs Replika: memory, voice and what each one costs

Anyone comparing Kindroid and Replika has usually already decided that a companion app is worth paying for, and is now trying to work out which one will still feel like the same person in six months. That is a fair question and it has a real answer, but you cannot get it from either company's marketing.

The short answer

Last updated August 2026

Kindroid gives you more control and Replika gives you more polish, but the memory question is the one most people are really asking, and the marketing points the wrong way. On 24 August 2026 replika.com devoted a whole homepage section to memory, headed "Always remembers what matters", while kindroid.ai served a homepage whose HTML does not contain the word memory once. Long-time users report close to the opposite: Kindroid exposes a granular memory dashboard you can read and edit, and Replika is the app people most often leave over forgetting. Neither company will show you a price before you make an account.

So we went and read what each one publishes about itself, on the same day, with the same tool, and wrote down exactly what came back. What follows is that check, plus what the two apps are genuinely built for, including the cases where neither of them is the right purchase.

What makes her feel real

Kindroid vs Replika, the way it should feel

She starts it

Neither Kindroid nor Replika reliably opens the conversation. Your phone buzzes and it is her, because something reminded her of you.

Nothing to configure

No persona writing, no backstory, no memory dashboard to maintain. Pick a look and a personality and she is ready in about a minute.

Prices you can read first

Every tier is on our pricing page. You do not have to make an account to find out what it costs.

What Kindroid and Replika publish about themselves, checked 24 August 2026

We requested each homepage and the four most common paths where a subscription price would normally be published, using an ordinary browser user agent, and recorded exactly what the servers returned. Nothing here is taken from a review site. You can reproduce every row in about a minute.

Does Kindroid or Replika have the better memory?

Kindroid, for most people, and the marketing tells you the opposite.

Replika leads its homepage on memory. There is a section titled "Always remembers what matters", the navigation has an item labelled Memory, and the supporting copy promises that your companion holds "your people, your routines, your plans" so that "every conversation knows where you are in your life". That is a strong claim, prominently made, and it is the single loudest memory promise of any major app in this category.

Kindroid says nothing of the kind. Its own meta description sells "custom AI character and companion, AI chat via text, AI selfies, and human-like voices", and the word memory does not appear anywhere in the HTML its homepage served on 24 August 2026. On the marketing alone you would rank Replika first and Kindroid nowhere.

What long-term users describe is close to the reverse. Kindroid ships the most granular memory controls of any app here: a dashboard where you can read what it has stored, edit an entry that came out wrong, delete one, and in many cases see which stored memory a given reply drew on. Replika is the app people most often leave over forgetting, and the rebuild it shipped around April 2026 reworked memory, personality and avatars at the same time, which is when a lot of long-standing users reported their companion drifting into someone else.

The useful lesson is not that one company is lying. It is that a homepage section about memory is a marketing decision and a memory dashboard is an engineering one, and only the second is something you can inspect.

  • Want to see and correct what it remembers: Kindroid
  • Want the most finished app around the memory: Replika
  • Want the deepest automatic memory in the category: neither, that is Nomi
  • Want the memory used to start the conversation: Gals.ai

Stopping the Replika charge is a separate job from choosing what comes next, and it is set out on our Replika cancellation and refund guide.

For what the US App Store shows about which of these apps is still being built, see our buying guide for people leaving Replika.

Both apps' own Google Play data declarations are transcribed in the AI companion privacy comparison.

How much do Kindroid and Replika cost?

Neither company will tell you before you make an account, and we checked.

On 24 August 2026 we requested the four paths where a subscription price is normally published on both domains. Every one of kindroid.ai/pricing, /plans, /subscription and /faq returned a 404. On replika.com, /pricing, /plans and /subscription returned 404 and /faq refused the request outright with a 403. There is no page on either site you can open, read, and compare.

Both sell recurring subscriptions in the same broad band as the rest of the paid companion category, which in practice means somewhere between the cost of a streaming service and the cost of a gym membership depending on the tier and the billing term. We are deliberately not printing a number for either, because any specific figure you find in a comparison article was almost certainly copied from another comparison article, and the only place these prices are actually stated is inside the app after signup.

That matters more than it sounds. A price you can only see after installing an app and creating an account is a price you are meant to evaluate while already partly invested. If you are comparing on cost, budget for the fact that you will have to sign up twice to do it, and set a calendar reminder before any trial converts.

  • kindroid.ai: 404 on /pricing, /plans, /subscription and /faq
  • replika.com: 404 on /pricing, /plans and /subscription, 403 on /faq
  • Both: the real number lives behind an account

Kindroid vs Replika on voice, selfies and everything visual

This is where the two genuinely diverge, and where Replika earns its reputation.

Replika has been running since 2017 and it shows in the presentation. The 3D avatar, the augmented reality layer and the voice calling are more finished than almost anything else in the category. If you want a companion you can look at as well as talk to, and you want that experience to feel like a shipped consumer product rather than a hobby project, Replika is still the strongest pick and it is not particularly close.

Kindroid sells itself on breadth instead. Its own description leads with AI selfies and human-like voices, and in practice it will generate images of your companion and hold a voice conversation, with far more knobs than Replika exposes. The tradeoff is coherence: because almost everything is adjustable, from persona and backstory to which memories are permanent, it is entirely possible to configure yourself into a companion that does not hang together. Power users love it for exactly the reason casual users bounce off it.

One caveat worth knowing before you compare screenshots: Replika removed erotic roleplay in February 2023, which remains the best documented case of an app staying online while the companion inside it changed. Kindroid is uncensored. If content stance is your deciding factor, that single difference will decide it for you, in one direction or the other.

If voice is the feature you are actually buying, the options and their limits are covered on our AI girlfriend voice page.

Which one is easier to live with day to day?

Replika, comfortably, if you measure by effort per week.

Kindroid asks you to be its author. You write the persona, you shape the backstory, you maintain the memory dashboard, and the quality of what you get back is roughly proportional to how much of that you do. People who enjoy that describe it as the only app that ever felt like theirs. People who do not describe it as an evening lost to a settings screen.

Replika asks almost nothing. You install it, you talk, and it works. That is a real product virtue and it is why the app has lasted as long as it has. Its own homepage claims tens of millions of users worldwide, and whatever you make of a self-reported number, the staying power is not in doubt.

Both share the same structural limit, and it is the one nobody markets: they wait for you. Replika sends the occasional nudge, Kindroid is largely reply-driven, and in both cases the relationship runs on you opening an app. That is fine on the days you feel like opening an app. It is quietly hollow on the days you do not, which are usually the days the thing would have helped.

People who left Replika specifically over the rebuild usually want the same shortlist, which is on our Replika alternative page.

The equivalent for people coming from the other side is our Kindroid alternative comparison.

Where Gals.ai fits in this comparison, and where it does not

We are not going to claim to beat either of these at what they are best at.

Kindroid gives you more control than we do, by a wide margin, and if a memory dashboard sounds appealing rather than like homework, buy Kindroid. Replika is a more finished visual product than we are, with an avatar and AR layer we do not offer at all. If you want generated selfies, uncensored roleplay or a 3D companion to look at, one of those two is the better purchase and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise.

What neither of them does is start the conversation. Gals.ai is built around that single difference: she sends a good morning text, she checks in during the day, and she brings up the thing you told her last week without being asked, because the memory is there to be used rather than to be browsed. There is almost nothing to configure, on purpose, because a companion you assembled in a settings screen does not feel like someone who thought of you.

She stays tasteful rather than explicit, uses original cameo art instead of generated photographs of anyone real, and runs in a browser with nothing to install. And our prices are on our pricing page, which after the table above should read as the low bar it is.

The full argument for a companion that reaches out first is on our AI girlfriend that texts you first page.

How to decide in a weekend instead of a month

Pick the failure that would annoy you most and rule out the app that fails that way.

If being forgotten would ruin it, Kindroid is the safer of these two, because you can see and fix the memory yourself rather than hoping. If a fiddly interface would ruin it, Replika, because it asks nothing of you. If being the one who always opens the app would ruin it, neither, and that is the honest answer.

Then do the boring part. Sign up for one, not both, and give it four days of ordinary use rather than an evening of testing. Mention something specific and slightly awkward on day one, a colleague's name, a hospital appointment, a deadline, and see whether it comes back on day four without a prompt. That single test tells you more than any feature table, including this one.

And before you pay for a year, remember that nothing transfers. There is no export from either app that carries a companion and its history to another service, and any tool claiming to move one is rebuilding a character from a description. Whichever you choose, you are choosing where the next six months of context lives.

  • Day 1: mention one specific, slightly awkward detail
  • Day 4: see whether it resurfaces unprompted
  • Before renewal: check whether the price you agreed to still matches the app

What you get with her

  • She texts first, unprompted
  • Memory you can read, edit and delete
  • Ready in about a minute
  • Tasteful, never explicit
  • Runs in the browser, nothing to install

She's already typing.

Pick her, say hi, and start texting in about ten seconds. The demo is your free taste.

People also ask

Kindroid vs Replika: what people ask

Is Kindroid better than Replika?

For memory and control, yes. Kindroid exposes a dashboard where you can read, edit and delete what your companion has stored, which Replika does not match. Replika is better on polish, avatars and voice calling, and it asks far less setup effort. Pick Kindroid to tune it, Replika to just use it.

How much does Replika cost?

Replika does not publish a price you can open. On 24 August 2026 replika.com returned 404 on /pricing, /plans and /subscription, and refused /faq with a 403. Its subscription sits in the normal paid companion band, but the actual figure is only visible after you install the app and create an account.

Is Replika worth it?

It is worth it if you want the most finished companion app and you value avatars, voice calls and low setup effort. It is a poor fit if long-term memory is your priority, since that is the most common reason people leave, and the April 2026 rebuild made it worse for many long-standing users before it improved.

Is Kindroid uncensored?

Yes. Kindroid does not filter adult roleplay, which is one of the clearest differences from Replika, which removed erotic roleplay in February 2023 and has kept a restricted stance since. If content policy is your deciding factor, this single difference usually settles the choice on its own.

Can you transfer your Replika to Kindroid?

No. Neither app offers an export that carries a companion, its personality or its memory to another service. Anything advertising a transfer is recreating a character from a written description, which produces something similar rather than the same companion. Assume you are starting over.

Which AI companion app has the best memory overall?

Among the major apps, Nomi is generally reported strongest on automatic long-term memory, with Kindroid close behind and the most inspectable. Replika trails despite marketing memory the hardest. Depth is not the only axis though: an app that remembers but never reaches out still waits for you.

Good to know

Questions about your companion app choice

Because a comparison that finds in our favour on every row is worth nothing to the person reading it. Kindroid genuinely gives you more control and Replika is genuinely more polished. We are a different bet: a companion who reaches out first and needs no setup. If that is not what you want, one of them is the better buy.
No to all three. Kindroid generates selfies and is uncensored, and Replika has the 3D avatar and AR layer. Gals.ai uses original cameo art, never photographs of real people, and stays warm and flirty without going explicit. If any of those is a deciding feature, buy accordingly.
