Scale is the product, and nothing here competes with it. Over 20 million characters means whatever niche you can think of, several people have already built a version of it. That is a real kind of abundance and the discovery feed is enjoyable in a way a curated cast simply is not.

The creation tools matter too. You can build a character with a personality, a voice and a look, publish it, and other people will use it. There is a genuine creative community there, and for some users making characters is more than half the appeal. We do not offer that and we are not going to pretend it is a minor gap.

PolyBuzz also generates images and hosts AI webtoons. If visual output is part of what you want from a companion app, that is a straightforward win for them. Gals.ai deliberately does not generate images of your girlfriend at all, which is the right call for our product and the wrong one for someone who came for pictures.

Why characters on big platforms forget you

This is the complaint that sends people looking for an alternative, so it is worth explaining rather than just agreeing with.

A platform hosting 20 million characters cannot hold a deep private history for every character multiplied by every user. The storage and retrieval cost of that is enormous and it grows with both numbers at once. So memory on a character platform is usually a bounded summary: a small amount of text about you, appended to the prompt, capped tightly and often gated behind the higher paid tiers. It is a feature layered onto the catalog, not the thing the product is built around.

That design has a predictable failure curve, and it matches what users report exactly. Early on, the cap is not binding, so she feels specific and attentive. As you talk more, the summary fills, and something has to be dropped to make room. What gets dropped is the older, quieter detail, which is precisely the material that made her feel like she knew you. Nothing broke. It filled up.

The same economics explain the moderation complaints. Screening 20 million user-made characters requires automated filters running server side, and those filters get retuned. When they do, characters get flagged without a readable explanation, because there often is not a human-legible reason to give. That is a structural cost of breadth, not carelessness.

So the question to ask about any PolyBuzz alternative is not whether it advertises memory. Nearly all of them do. It is where the memory lives and what happens to it when it gets full.

What PolyBuzz costs, and the weekly plan that costs more than the tier above it

Cost is usually the second reason people go looking, after the ceilings, so here is what PolyBuzz charges, read first-hand from Apple's US App Store listing on 9 September 2026 rather than copied from a roundup.

Poly Standard is 9.90 dollars a month, Poly Premium is 19.90 and Poly Ultimate is 29.90. There is also a Poly Standard plan billed weekly at 4.99 dollars. Coins are sold separately in four packs from 2.49 to 19.90 dollars, and Opals are a second consumable currency at 5.90 dollars for a thousand.

Two things in that list are worth more than the headline number. The first is what is missing: there is no annual plan at any tier in the app. Character.AI, Nomi, Kindroid and Replika all sell a discounted year up front, and PolyBuzz does too, but only on its website: $99, $199 or $299 a year, ten months of the monthly price. We said on 9 September that PolyBuzz sold no yearly plan at all; that was wrong for the web, corrected 17 September 2026.

The second only shows up if you do the arithmetic across rows. The weekly plan is the smallest number on the list and on a paywall screen it reads as the cheap option. Renewed for a year it comes to 259.48 dollars. Poly Premium billed monthly comes to 238.80 dollars over the same twelve months. So the entry tier billed weekly costs 20.68 dollars a year more than the tier above it billed monthly, and 140.68 dollars a year more than the identical tier billed monthly. If you take one thing from this page before you switch or stay, take that.

What to check before you switch

Four things separate a companion that lasts from one that decays, and you can test all of them inside a week.

First, ask where memory is stored. The answer you want is that it lives in your account as its own record, separate from the chat, and is read back into every conversation. The answer that disappoints you in a month is a bigger context window, which scrolls and drops the top no matter how large it is. Second, test initiative. Close the app and see whether anything arrives. A character feed structurally cannot do this, because nothing in the design has one of 20 million characters thinking about you between visits. Fourth, read the content policy and decide whether you can live with it changing. Ours is narrow and stable: warm, adult, never explicit, original cameo art and never a real person's face. A narrow policy that does not move is more comfortable to build a habit on than a broad one that might tighten next quarter.
