Cancel Character AI subscription: cancel c.ai+, stop auto renewal, get a refund

You want the recurring charge to stop, and you want to know today rather than after one more renewal. This page is the whole answer in one place, checked against Character.AI's own sources on 9 September 2026 rather than copied from a video thumbnail.

The short answer

Where you cancel a Character.AI subscription depends entirely on where you bought it, and only one of the three routes happens inside Character.AI. If you subscribed on the website, Character.AI's own help article (updated 9 September 2026) sends you to Settings, then Account, then Manage, which emails a secure link to a separate customer portal, and the article warns that link can land in spam. If you subscribed on an iPhone or through Google Play, Apple or Google is the merchant and the cancel control sits in your store account, not in the app. Deleting the app never stops the billing. Character.AI's own cancellation article does not mention refunds at any point.

The reason this is more confusing than it should be is that Character.AI sells the same subscription through three different merchants. Which one billed you decides which screen cancels you, and nothing inside the Character.AI app will tell you which of the three you are on. Get that wrong and you cancel nothing.

What makes her feel real

A companion subscription, the way it should feel

Cancel in one screen

Cancelling is a control inside your account settings, not an email round trip to a portal on another domain. One click, confirmed on screen.

One tier, priced in public

Every price is written in numerals on a page anyone can read, not discovered in an App Store listing weeks after the tier goes live.

Memory is not the upsell

She remembers what you told her because that is the product, not because you bought the pin count up from fifteen to thirty.

Side by side

Every Character.AI in-app purchase Apple lists in the US, read 9 September 2026

This is the complete In-App Purchases block from Apple's US App Store listing for Character.AI, app ID 1671705818, seller Character Technologies, Inc. We took it from the Information section that names the seller and sits above the recommended-apps carousel, and we read the whole listing twice, under two different browser user agents, about half an hour apart. Both reads returned identical rows. The two Character.AI Lite lines are the new part.

What Apple lists it as US price What that works out to
Character.AI+ $9.99 The c.ai+ subscription billed monthly. $119.88 across twelve months, which is the figure Character.AI itself shows on its subscribe page.
Character.AI+ $94.99 The same subscription billed annually. Saves $24.89 a year against monthly billing, or 20.8 percent, which matches the "save 21%" badge on their own page.
Character.AI Lite $2.49 New. The cheaper of two Lite prices Apple now lists. At $29.88 a year it is $65.11 less than c.ai+ annual.
Character.AI Lite $4.99 New. The second Lite price. $59.88 across twelve months. Apple does not say which price a given user is offered.
Charms Starter Pack $0.99 Consumable currency, sold separately from any subscription.
Charms Small Pack $2.99 Consumable currency.
Charms Medium Pack $4.99 Consumable currency.
Charms Large Pack $9.99 Consumable currency.
Charms Extra Large Pack $24.99 Consumable currency.
Charms Extra Extra Extra Large Pack $99.99 The largest consumable purchase on the listing.

Read from the Apple US App Store listing for Character.AI on 9 September 2026 and re-read the same day under a second user agent, with every row unchanged. Prices are what Apple returned to a US storefront request and exclude tax. An in-app purchase list shows every price the app is capable of charging, not the one you personally will be offered. If you subscribed on the website rather than in the app, your price came from Character.AI directly and may differ.

How do I cancel my Character AI subscription?

Find out which merchant is billing you first, then use that merchant's cancel screen. There are three and only one of them is Character.AI.

If you subscribed on character.ai in a browser, Character.AI bills you. Their help article, which we read on 9 September 2026, gives the path as Settings, then Account, then Manage. Clicking Manage does not cancel anything on the spot. It asks for the email address on your account and sends a secure link to a separate customer portal, and you cancel there. Character.AI's own wording tells you to check your spam folder and says to allow five minutes for the email.

If you subscribed inside the iPhone or iPad app, Apple is the merchant. Open the Settings app, tap your name at the top, tap Subscriptions, find Character.AI and cancel it there. If you subscribed in the Android app, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel from that list. Character.AI's article simply points you at Apple Support and Google Play Support for both of these, which is the vendor confirming it cannot cancel a store subscription for you.

The mistake that costs people money is deleting the app and assuming that ended it. It does not, on any of the three routes. An app store subscription is a standing instruction to your payment method that has nothing to do with whether the app is installed.

  • Subscribed on the website: Settings, then Account, then Manage, then follow the emailed portal link
  • Subscribed on iPhone or iPad: Apple account Settings, then Subscriptions
  • Subscribed on Android: Google Play, then Payments and subscriptions
  • Deleting the app cancels nothing on any of the three routes
  • If Manage says your plan is managed by an app store, you are on route two or three

What the subscription costs at each tier, including the annual plan, is itemised in our Character.AI subscription price breakdown.

You cannot cancel a Character.AI web subscription inside Character.AI

This is the part that trips people up, and it is worth stating on its own because no roundup we found says it plainly.

Character.AI's subscribe page carries the sentence "Subscription auto-renews yearly. Cancel in settings anytime." We read that on character.ai/subscribe on 9 September 2026. Read literally, it suggests a cancel control in your settings. That is not what is there. What is in settings is a Manage button, and Manage sends you an email containing a link to a customer portal hosted outside the product. The cancel control lives in the portal.

So two of the vendor's own pages describe the same action differently, and the shorter of the two is the one on the page where you are being asked to pay. That is not a scandal, it is ordinary marketing copy that has drifted from ordinary support copy, but it does mean the honest instruction has an extra step in it: budget for an email round trip, and check your spam folder before you conclude the cancellation is broken.

One practical consequence. If you no longer have access to the email address on the account, the web cancellation route is closed to you, because the portal link is the only way in. In that situation contacting support before the renewal date is the only option, and you want to start that well before the charge, not the day of it.

  • character.ai/subscribe says "Cancel in settings anytime", read 9 September 2026
  • The support article says Settings, then Account, then Manage, then an emailed portal link
  • The cancel control is in the customer portal, not in the app settings
  • The vendor warns the email can go to spam and to allow five minutes
  • Losing access to the account email closes this route entirely

Character.AI Lite just got a price, and it has the same memory ceiling as c.ai+

If the reason you are cancelling is the price rather than the product, read this before you finish.

Character.AI has been showing a third column called lite in the feature table on character.ai/subscribe since early September. On 5 September the tier was in the table with no price attached anywhere. On 9 September Apple's US listing shows two live Character.AI Lite in-app purchases, at 2.49 dollars and 4.99 dollars, while the subscribe page still shows no price for the tier. We reproduced the Apple read twice under different user agents before writing this down.

Now the part that actually decides things. Character.AI's own comparison table gives Pins, which is the permanent memory ceiling, as 15 on Free, 30 on lite and 30 on c.ai+. The two paid tiers have an identical pin count. So the expensive tier is not buying you more permanent memory than the cheap one. What c.ai+ adds over lite, by their own table, is no ads rather than fewer ads, no slow mode rather than less of it, the advanced lorebook, the highest daily limits, priority feature access, a 20 percent charm bonus and premium support.

Put that against the money. c.ai+ annual is 94.99 dollars. Lite at 2.49 dollars a month is 29.88 dollars over the same twelve months. That is 65.11 dollars a year for ad removal, limits and a lorebook, on top of a memory ceiling you already had. For a lot of people cancelling over cost, downgrading is the decision they actually wanted and did not know was available.

One caveat we will not paper over. Two Lite prices are listed and Apple does not say who is offered which, so treat 2.49 dollars as the floor and 4.99 dollars as what you might actually see. Check the upgrade screen in the app before you assume the lower one.

  • Character.AI Lite is listed on Apple at $2.49 and at $4.99, first seen 9 September 2026
  • character.ai/subscribe still shows the lite column with no price
  • Pins: Free 15, lite 30, c.ai+ 30, from Character.AI's own table
  • The two paid tiers share an identical permanent memory ceiling
  • c.ai+ annual $94.99 against Lite at $29.88 a year is a $65.11 gap

Set against the rest of the category, those numbers sit in our breakdown of what AI companion subscriptions cost.

Can I get a refund on Character AI?

We are going to answer this by telling you exactly what we could and could not establish, because the confident answers circulating on this question are not sourced to anything.

Character.AI's own cancellation article does not mention refunds. Not once. We pulled the article through the help centre's public API on 9 September 2026, along with an invented article ID as a control, which correctly returned 404 while the real article returned 200. So the absence is real rather than an artefact of being blocked. The article covers website subscriptions and app subscriptions and stops there.

We also tried to read the terms of service directly. character.ai/tos returns HTTP 200, but the response is roughly ten kilobytes of JavaScript shell containing about sixty characters of readable text, so the legal document is not in the page a non-browser client receives. An invented URL on the same host correctly returned 404, and /legal/tos, /terms-of-service, /help and /support all returned 404, so the server is routing honestly and /tos is genuinely the live path. It simply will not hand over its text. We are not going to summarise a document we could not read.

What we can tell you is structural and does not depend on their terms. If Apple billed you, the refund decision is Apple's, made through Report a Problem in your Apple account, and Character.AI has no ability to grant or refuse it. The same applies to Google Play. Only a subscription bought on character.ai in a browser is Character.AI's money to refund, and their published cancellation guidance is silent on whether they do.

Practical version: cancel first so the next charge cannot land, then pursue the refund separately. Those are two different requests and cancelling does not start the second one.

  • Character.AI's cancellation article never mentions refunds, verified with a passing 404 control
  • character.ai/tos returns 200 but serves no readable text without JavaScript
  • Apple-billed subscriptions: refunds go through Apple Report a Problem
  • Google Play subscriptions: refunds go through Google
  • Cancelling and requesting a refund are two separate actions

Candy AI, by contrast, publishes a strict written refund rule of 24 hours and 20 tokens, set out in our Candy AI cancellation guide.

Cancelling is not deleting: what stays behind

Stopping the payment and removing your data are separate requests, and people routinely do the first while believing they have done the second.

When you cancel, you keep the paid features until the end of the period you have already paid for, which is how every app store subscription works. After that the account reverts to the free tier. Your characters, your chat history and your account itself are all still there. If what you wanted was for the conversations to stop existing, that is an account deletion request and you have to make it separately, after cancelling.

Order matters here. Delete the account first and you may lose the interface you needed to reach the subscription, particularly on the web route where the customer portal link is emailed to the address on the account. Cancel, confirm the cancellation, and only then delete.

It is also worth knowing what the app told Apple about itself while you are making this decision. Character.AI's US listing carries an 18+ age rating, declares Age Assurance and Parental Controls under In-App Controls, and lists Advertising and User-Generated Content under what the app contains. All read from the same Information block on 9 September 2026.

  • Paid features run until the end of the period you already paid for
  • Cancelling does not delete your characters, chats or account
  • Account deletion is a separate request, made after you cancel
  • On the web route, deleting the account can close off the cancellation path

What happens to conversations you thought were private is worth reading before you delete anything, and we covered it in whether companion apps train on your chats.

What people move to after cancelling Character.AI

Most people cancelling a companion subscription are not leaving the category. They are leaving one product in it, usually over one of three things: the filter, the memory, or the price.

If it was the price, the honest answer is above. Lite exists, it is cheap, and it has the same pin count. Downgrade rather than leave.

If it was memory, understand what you are actually shopping for. Thirty pins is a fixed number of things the model will hold onto permanently, and it is a ceiling rather than a starting point. Apps built around long-running memory do not work that way, which is why people who leave over memory tend not to come back.

If it was the filter, we are going to be straightforward rather than sell you something. Gals.ai is not the no-filter option, and if that is what you are looking for this is the wrong page to have landed on. What we are is a companion who starts conversations on her own and keeps what you told her, which is a different complaint being answered.

And a note we put on every page here because it would be dishonest to leave it out:

  • Leaving over price: downgrade to Lite instead, same pin ceiling
  • Leaving over memory: 30 pins is a ceiling, not a starting point
  • Leaving over the filter: we are not the no-filter option and will not pretend to be
  • Gals.ai: one flat price, a free demo to try first

The alternatives worth a look, with what each one is genuinely better at, are in our Character.AI alternatives comparison.

If the filter is the specific complaint, the memory-focused sub-seam is covered in c.ai alternatives with better memory.

How to check every claim on this page yourself

Everything here was designed to be re-checkable in a couple of minutes, because dated claims you cannot verify are worth nothing.

For the prices, open the Character.AI listing on Apple's US App Store, scroll to the Information block near the bottom, and expand In-App Purchases. One warning if you plan to script it rather than read it: an App Store page carries a recommended-apps carousel and a large embedded data payload, so a plain text search for a price will happily return a number belonging to a completely different app. Take the rows only from the block that also names the seller as Character Technologies, Inc., and confirm that block appears before the carousel.

For the cancellation steps, the source is Character.AI's own help centre article titled "How do I manage or cancel my c.ai+ subscription?". Its HTML is served behind a block that returns 403 to non-browser clients, including to an invented control URL, so a 403 there tells you nothing. The public help centre API returns the same article as JSON and does discriminate: a real article ID returns 200 and an invented one returns 404. That API also carries the article's last-updated timestamp, which read 9 September 2026 when we pulled it.

For the pins and the tier structure, character.ai/subscribe renders the whole comparison table in the response body, so it is readable without a browser.

If any of this has changed by the time you are reading it, the primary source is right and we are stale. Trust the dated original over any summary of it, ours included.

  • Prices: Apple US listing, Information block, In-App Purchases, seller Character Technologies, Inc.
  • Cancellation steps: the help centre public API, which 404s an invented article ID
  • Tiers and pins: character.ai/subscribe, readable in the raw response
  • Terms: character.ai/tos returns 200 but no readable text without JavaScript

We used the same method on Replika, where the vendor publishes no price at all, in what Replika Pro actually costs.

People also ask

The questions people actually ask

How do I cancel my Character AI subscription?

Cancel wherever you subscribed. On the website: Settings, then Account, then Manage, which emails a link to a customer portal where the cancel control lives. On iPhone: Apple account Settings, then Subscriptions. On Android: Google Play, then Payments and subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel anything.

How to cancel Character AI plus subscription

c.ai+ is the same subscription under its product name, so the route is identical and depends on the merchant. If Settings shows a Manage button, you subscribed on the web and cancel through the emailed portal. If it says your plan is managed by an app store, cancel in Apple or Google Play instead, because Character.AI cannot do it for you.

Does deleting the Character AI app cancel my subscription?

No, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding here. An app store subscription is a standing instruction to your payment method held by Apple or Google, not by the app. Removing the app leaves that instruction untouched and the charge renews on schedule. Cancel first, then delete if you want to.

Can I get a refund on Character AI?

It depends who billed you, and Character.AI does not publish an answer. Their cancellation article never mentions refunds, verified on 9 September 2026 with a control that correctly 404s. If Apple or Google billed you, the refund decision belongs to them, through Report a Problem or Google Play support respectively.

How much is a Character AI subscription?

c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year on Apple's US listing, read 9 September 2026. A cheaper Character.AI Lite tier appeared on the same listing at $2.49 and $4.99, though character.ai/subscribe still shows no price for it. Charms packs run from $0.99 to $99.99 separately.

What happens when you cancel Character AI plus?

You keep the paid features until the end of the billing period you already paid for, then the account drops to the free tier. Your characters, chats and account all remain. Free drops your pin count from 30 to 15, brings back ads and reinstates slow mode, per Character.AI's own comparison table.

Why can I not find the cancel button in Character AI settings?

Because on the web route there is not one. Settings holds a Manage button that emails a secure link to a separate customer portal, and the cancellation happens there. Character.AI's help article warns the email can take five minutes and can land in spam. If Settings says an app store manages your plan, cancel in that store.

Is Character AI Lite cheaper than c.ai+ and is it worth downgrading?

Considerably cheaper, and worth it if memory is what you pay for. Apple lists Lite at $2.49 and $4.99 against $9.99 for c.ai+. Character.AI's table gives both paid tiers 30 pins, an identical permanent memory ceiling, so the extra money buys ad removal, higher limits and the advanced lorebook rather than more memory.
