Can ChatGPT be your AI girlfriend?

It can hold the conversation, and it will not hold the relationship. That is the whole difference in one sentence.

Given a good prompt, ChatGPT writes warmer, funnier and more coherent dialogue than most dedicated companion apps, because it is running a much larger model with far more money behind it. Anyone telling you a companion app produces better prose is not being straight with you. On raw conversational quality the general assistant wins, and it is not close.

What it will not do is behave like someone who is in a relationship with you. It answers when addressed and then stops existing. It has no reason to wonder how your Thursday went. Its default gravity is helpfulness, so the persona you wrote erodes a little every time you ask it something practical, until one day you notice you are talking to an assistant wearing a name.

That is not a flaw. ChatGPT is a general tool and being a general tool is exactly what nine million US reviewers rated 4.83. It is only a problem if the thing you wanted was a person who thinks of you first.

Replika vs ChatGPT on memory

Both remember you now, which was not true two years ago, and the difference has moved from whether to what for.

ChatGPT ships a memory system you can open, read, edit and wipe. It is the most transparent memory in consumer AI: you can see the individual things it decided to keep about you and delete the ones that are wrong. For a companion use case it has one structural quirk, which is that it stores facts useful to an assistant. It is very good at remembering that you prefer concise answers and less reliably attentive to the fact that your mother is having a scan on Tuesday.

Replika's own App Store listing, read on 31 August 2026, says it remembers your people, plans and goals so you do not have to repeat yourself, and that it follows up and checks in when it matters rather than only when you open the app. That is a stronger proactive claim than Replika made a year ago and it deserves to be reported rather than dismissed. It is also the claim long-time users argue with most, and the rebuild the app shipped around April 2026 reworked memory, personality and avatars together, which is when a lot of people described their companion drifting into a stranger.

The test that settles it costs you four days and no money. Tell each one something specific and slightly awkward, a colleague's name, a hospital appointment, a deadline you are dreading. Then do not mention it again. On day four, see which one raises it without being asked. Marketing cannot fake that and neither can a feature table, including ours.

How much do Replika and ChatGPT cost?

Neither will show you a number on a page you can simply open, and we tried both on the same afternoon.

replika.com/pricing returned a 404. We also reported on this page, from 31 August to 2 September 2026, that replika.com/legal/terms-of-service returned an HTTP 500 and concluded that Replika's terms of service were not reachable on the open web. That conclusion was wrong, and the mistake was ours. We are correcting it here on 3 September 2026 rather than deleting it.

The 500 is real and it is still there. It is also a dead path we guessed at, not the live one. Replika publishes its terms at replika.com/legal/terms/en, which returned a clean 200 when we requested it on 3 September 2026 and carries a document dated 30 March 2026. The short link replika.com/terms redirects there correctly. We are leaving the record of the error visible because a page that tells you to check vendors yourself should also show what a bad check looks like: a 500 on one guessed URL is evidence about that URL and nothing else.

We are deliberately not printing a figure for either. Both sit in the ordinary consumer subscription band, and ChatGPT's paid tier costs meaningfully more than a typical companion app subscription while doing vastly more. If you are running the numbers, the honest framing is not which is cheaper. It is whether a companion subscription earns its place alongside the assistant subscription you are almost certainly already paying for.

Why is ChatGPT rated 12+ and Replika rated 17+?

This is the single most surprising row in the table and it is worth two minutes of your attention.

On 31 August 2026, Apple's US App Store listed ChatGPT at 12+ and every dedicated companion app we checked at 17+: Replika, Nomi, Kindroid, Character AI and Chai, without exception. The app that tens of millions of Americans actually use for late night conversation carries the softer rating, and the apps built specifically for that conversation carry the stricter one.

The reason is mundane rather than sinister. Age ratings follow the content a developer declares, and a general assistant declares infrequent mild themes while a romantic companion declares mature themes as a matter of course. It says nothing about which is safer for a particular teenager, and everything about how the two categories describe themselves to Apple.

It matters for one practical reason. If you are choosing on the assumption that the store rating reflects how intense or intimate a product gets in practice, that assumption does not hold here. Judge it on the product, not the badge. And if the person you are choosing for is under eighteen, none of these, including ours, is the right answer; California's SB 243 took effect on 1 January 2026 and New York passed a companion model law in the same window precisely because this category grew up faster than its guardrails.

How to decide in a week without paying twice

Run the cheap experiment before the expensive one.

Spend one week with the ChatGPT you already pay for. Write the persona properly, use it every day, and keep a note of two things: how often you opened it because you wanted company rather than an answer, and how many times it brought something up first. The second number will be zero. Whether the first number was high enough to justify a second subscription is the entire decision, and a week of your own data answers it better than any comparison page.

If the answer is yes, then run the four day memory test on whichever companion product you shortlist, and check the boring things before you commit to a year: whether messages are capped or metered, whether voice draws down a credit balance, and whether you can delete your history. Diarize the renewal date the day you sign up, because a companion subscription is the kind people forget until it appears on a statement in November.

One last thing that applies to all of these, ours included. Nothing transfers. There is no export that carries a companion and its history from one service to another, and any tool claiming to do it is rebuilding a character from a written description. Whichever way you go, you are choosing where the next six months of context is going to live.
